live bass minnows will do the trick. place one on a arberdeen #4 hook and drop it down three feet under a bobber. or three feet from a slip sinker. it may take some time before you get him, but he will eventualy go for it.
repallas work well and if he is a large bass use a split rapalla. mepps spinners work well, serface lure like a jitter bug early morning or late evening will work.
a slow moving canal you may want to try a lazey Ike. bring it in as slowly as posible.
if you are having problems with your plastics, try swicthing up your presentations. add a little jerking motion once in a while and allow it to drop once in a while.
chacnes are good he is hip to your presentation methods so changing up is the key.

[ul][li]I keep one or two of those rapallas in my box at all times. [/li] [li]mega baits makes some realy noce holographics crank and jig baits. [/li] [li]Burkly makes some nice plastics that work well in the canals. [/li] [li]flies tied on to a three to five foot leader tied to a bubble is killer for spring and mid summer.[/li] [li]jitterbugs early morn and late evenings or overcast days are good. [/li][/ul]
for canal fishing I like the slower moving crank baits. but I will go to a mepps spinner from time to time with great suscess.
the fun of fishing canals are you never know what is going to come up day or night. catfish bass pike, most any thing that lives in the lake will eventualy venture in to the canal when conditions are right. so it may seem like at times you cant see a fish there many times they are laying in the weeds and under over hanging shrubs and in fallen trees.
you can spend countless hours working a canal and think you know every thing there is to know about it only to one day see some thing you would never have expected to be there.
half the fun of canal fishing is the experimentation. lets not for get live bait. when canal fising if you can provide a bug that is bussing around the water you will do well,

Have you tried Nightcrawlers?? You can use them natural, green or even inflate them for more enhancement.

Here comes my 2 cents, Bass spook easy. So if your making a lot of noise or cast a shadow on the water you could scare them. That may be a problems also.

Try casting from down stream from where the fish is remember if you can see the fish chances are the fish can see you cast up ahead of the fish and work the lure or bait back to you and across try different retrieves stopping and twitching to get the fishes attention when he moves stop the bait and let the current take it eventually he will strike it even if only to try chasing it away also try at different times of day early morning or just around dusk they are most active feeding midday they don't feed much most of you bites then are reaction strikes or just simply chasing your bait away hope this helps also if its spawning time in your area the fish may just be protecting the nest and won't bite
