Learn About the 'Rigs to Reefs' Concept

OK guys,

So..... as sportfishing anglers, we have lost our battle with the feds, in the main, and the California DFG/Fisheries Boards on the rockfish issue.

We've done very well on the bottom trawling issue thanks to SAC, UASC, etc.

Our next battle is going to be a fight over the 27 oil and gas rigs off our coast that will be de-commisioned in the not-to-distant future.

The anglers stance is 'removing the rigs sub-structure will be killing millions of aquatic animals that have, since the 60's, established the rigs as their life sustaining homes.'
'Let's not evict our finny friends!'

The problems involved in trying to take the rigs to the scrap yard overweigh the simple solution of breaking up the rigs where they stand to serve as fish habitat. Of course, navagational safety standards can handily be met!

Don't let those who would take away fishing reefs that we have actually had to pay for in the past, take away this very cost effective ocean fishery inhancement!

what if they just take out the part of the rigs above the surface and set up fences keeping vessels away from the underwater structure, as it may be a navigational safety hazard.[:/]

Hi there DH_tubinjoe,

As I said, cutting up the rigs so that they are not navigational hazards to anything but submarines would be simple. The rigs can go to 200+ feet here locally below the ocean so it's not to hard to clip the rigs 30, 40, or 50 feet above the bottom and still have clearance for boats!

Let's see what happens!
