??? 6 - 8 inch fish ???
#1
So I have kind of a weird question. I don't know if anyone will have any helpful info. but it's worth a shot to me. I work at Novell in Provo and there's a pond at the South end of the parking lot, just across the street from the East Bay Golf Course. I've caught carp out of the pond to use for catfish bait, but I wonder if there are other kinds of fish in there too. I suspect that it somehow has a connection to the golf course ponds, and I suspect that those are connected to Utah Lake. Now, I don't know just how easy it is for fish to get from the lake to the ponds, or if they even can, but I wonder if there are any bluegill or largemouth in these ponds.

When I got to work today I noticed that there were some small fish jumping in the pond. I assume they were small carp (approx. 6 to 8 inches long), but I wonder how big would last year's baby carp be by now? Are they usually bigger than 6-8 inches after one year or is that all the bigger they grow their first year. I'm wondering if it's possible that these fish I'm seeing are panfish. Any ideas?

I HAVE A SUGGESTION.....HOOK UP A PANFISH RIG AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS, IF YOU GET ONE OF THE LITTLE SUCKAS LOOK IT SQUARE IN THE EYE AND ASK WHAT IT IS....THEN YOU WILL HAVE AN ANSWER..LOL

REALLY THOUGH, I THINK CARP GROW RATHER SLOWLY...SO THEY MAY BE ONLY 8 INCHES AFTER A YEAR OR TWO...BUT IT NEVER HURTS TO CATCH ANYTHING...I MEAN IF THE LIL BUGGER IS A CARP YOU WILL HAVE SOME SWEET, TENDER, YOUNG, FRESH CARP MEAT FOR CUT BAIT. YAHOO.

LATERS,

That's what I plan on doing. I plan on going out and trying a worm and a bobber tomorrow at lunch maybe and seeing if I can't get any of the little guys to bite!

I talked with some folks about 3 years ago that regularly fished the golf course water and would catch everything from bluegill to big cats'. It has been a while since I've been down there so I don't know the current conditions.

There are actually a lot of ponds that feed into those by Novel and the golf course starting at Springville behind the fish hatchery... yes is is all the same water. A few of the ponds (near the old iron plant) contain some very nice bucketmouths but you have to work a little to find them (the ponds). However, I'd never eat anything out of those waters due to the iron and other crap that is there from the processing plants (ironton???)

Anyway, good luck and let us know how the fishin' goes.

Hey travelinangler thanks for the info! I'll let everyone know what kind of luck I have. If nothing else I'll continue to get my catfishing bait here! Convenient for me plus very easy to catch these carp.

I work in Lake Park Business complex here in SLC. it is right next to 201 and Bangeter Hwy. there are some nice ponds that go through StoneBridge golf course, but of course they all say no fishing!!! I can just imagine there are some nice channels in there, definitely with no fishing pressure.

I've also heard that the kitties like to go up in that area. All that water goes strait into the Provo harbor.

So, cat_man,

Did you get out to the pond during lunch? I'm interested in hearing about those ponds.

I got out there but I only had about 15 minutes since I had to leave and go work on a school project for 2 hours. I tossed out a worm under a tiny bobber but didn't get any hits. I did see a few small fish jumping, but I'm sure they're carp since no self-respecting gamefish would just jump for the fun of it like that, but carp are known to do it.

When I got back from my project, I went out there and tied a piece of worm to a small hook and line and tossed it about 10 feet off the bank and then tied it off to a tree trunk. When I get off at 6 I'll go check it and see if I got me a carp or something on there or not.

I'll let you know how it turns out tomorrow.

I work in Lake Park too. I used to see largemouth that they planted in the ponds. I haven't seen any this year, but they used to be there. When the course first opened people would come in and fish alot, but they left alot of trash so the course closed it for fishing. I see the carp spawn in late May/early June. I saw a heron catch a 12-14 inch catfish last summer. Rumor was that the golf course planted quite a few fish when it first opened. I don't know how many are left.

Ok, so after work I went out to check my little "setline" or whatever on the pond out by my work.

By darn the dang thing was snapped about 3 feet from where I tied it to the tree. I can only imagine that a large carp slurped up my piece of worm and then spent about 30 seconds flopping around before it snapped my line. I might give it another try today.

HAHA. That's a good one! [Tongue][cool] Well I went out there and hooked up two "TreeCat" rods, one with a size 12 hook and a piece of worm and the other with a size 2 hook and a piece of bread wadded up. Then I left to go get some Merit Badges for my scouts at the Provo Scout office. When I got back, I checked my lines and nothing on the bread(it had broken down into nothing probably, it was not on the hook). But, much to my delight on the worm I "set the hook", then "adjusted my drag" and started pulling in a nice little 7 inch fish!!!!!

Here's the kicker.........................guess what kind it was?????????[angelic][cool][Tongue][sly]
