I-80 report
#1
I fished the I-80 ponds today from about 5-7 PM. After trying just about every lure I usually use for bass and not even getting a bite, I put on a 1/8 oz panther martin and started catching fish. I caught 20 about the same size as the pic below (tiny little buggers) and 2 smallish bluegill. The bluegill were rising like crazy as the sun went down so I put on a 1/32 oz head with a 1" curly tail and actually managed to catch bass that were even smaller than the previous 20! I put the spinner back on and finally hooked into something big. I got a good look at it just before it threw the hook 10 feet from shore. It was a largemouth that was, at the very least 16". When it threw the hook I got a great view of its huge mouth. I could have easily put my fist into it.

I don't know why I couldn't hook into some bigger fish. I wonder if the bass are starting to stunt themselves out....or maybe the big fish just haven't turned on the bite yet? I also thought it was wierd that I didn't start catching fish until I stopped focusing on the reeds and shoreline. All the fish I caught were in the middle.

I've also attached a pic I snapped of a couple having their wedding photos taken. I guess nothing says I love you like salt/mud flats, a smelly lake, and horses. :-)

It took me a while to hook a bigger bass out of there . I decided one time to fish for the gills and put a bobber and small jig on and a big bass ate my bobber . Nice fight until he spit it back out . Nothing like a good lake stink to get me in the mood . LOL Those fish have seen a lot of stuff so they are smart , but can be had .

I TRIED TO GO THERE YESTERDAY TOO!! I TOOK A LITTLE DOSCOVERY RIDE AND FOUND THE ROAD THAT GOES PAST THE SALT LAKE YACHT MARINA AND OUT TO THE BLACK ROCK THEN SUPPOSEDLY YOU CAN WALK DOWN THE RAIL TRACKS TO THE POND....I WASNT GONNA..IT WAS STILL LIKE 1/2 A MILE. SO AS I LEFT AND DECIDED I WASTED TOO MUCH TIME FINDING AN EASIER WAY TO FISH....I SAW THE COUPLE, OR AT LEAST THE HORSES PULL UP, OUT THERE I WONDERED WHO THE HELL WAS TAKING A SUNSET RIDE ON THE SHORES OF THE GREAT STINK LAKE...MAN IT IS GETTING RIPE ISNT IT..I SMELL IT AT WORK, WHAT A STENCH. OH WELL MAYBE THIS RAIN WILL CLEAR A BIT BY AFTERNOON AND I CAN HIT THE POND FOR A LITTLE POST STORM ACTION....HELL I MAY TRY FOR A LITTLE DURING STORM ACTION.....AS FAR AS IM CONCERNED ANY ACTION IS GOOD ACTION...FISHING OR OTHERWISE....[cool][Wink][angelic]

Hey I have a question for everyone that has been to the I-80 pond before.

Is there a decent area on the bank that you can set up a camp chair and sit and relax and just watch the pond, without being in the middle of thick weeds and/or mud?

My wife (almost 6 months pregnant) may want to head out there with me tomorrow if the weather is decent, and she'll just sit in a chair and read while my little bro and I go out in our tubes, or fish off shore, but she can't be sitting in a patch of reeds or a mud bog or anything.

Also, how far of a walk is it from where you park? Is it steep/difficult terrain or could she handle it okay?
