Hey you outboard guys.
I have always ran the plugs that have come in the out board,My 90HP Johson has champions in it,My question is has anyone had better luck with other brands,The champions still cost me 4.95 a piece.there is another brand NGK I think that can go in my outboard,they are marine plugs and they dont have the the spark gap thingy,LOL.which is better standard plugs or marine plugs.?
The reason I am asking is I'm only getting about 3/4 of the summer and they start to foul out.will the marine plugs last longer.

I've been working on that problem. Apparently fouling plugs may have something to do with lack of seafoam to clean out your engine. I didn't do that past two seasons and that's probably the culprit in my situation. (Plugs blown out)
Ask Lee of Lee's Marine up in Hyrum. He will be very happy to answer any questions, he and I have corresponded several times and he has helped me in troubleshooting.
Lee said that spark plugs must be exact in accordance with the manufactor's recommendation (Mercury or any other company such as Johnson). Good luck!

The best plug I've found for most anything I do is Autolite. I haven't had much experience with boats, but I did run a variety of street rods for quite a few years. If they ran heavy on fuel or an older motor that would suck up oil, the Autolites out lasted all of them. The next would be Bosh platinum. I could even put a champion on my lawnmower and not get much out of it. Try them for a while. With my personal experience, I would buy anything but Champion plugs. Al

I run nothing but quality marine plugs, and I set a personal record last fall by having to first replace the plugs in my trolling motor (with new ones) and then clean those same new plugs on the same trip, and we only fished one day! And I run, Yamaha synthetic oil, mix it 50 to 1, as specified, run Sea Foam through it once, if not twice a year, and run it at full throttle for a few minutes after trolling. [/size]

Thats a nasty comment Mike. I don't have stock in Autolite. I just have the experiece on a large variety of motors and have tried almost everything out there. The BFT people need to understand that Mike works with me. I keep him locked up in a closet upstairs so he doesn't scare my customers away. It's time for your nap now Mike.

I use nothing but N.G.K. in both my big motor and my trolling motor.they do cost a litte more,but to me the cost is worth it.Haveing the proper gap is most important to have a proper fucutioning plug.About half way thru the season i will pull the plugs ,check them for fouling clean and regap.By doing this i can usually get two seasons out of my plugs.

I have a 1972, 2 1/2 horse air cooled Sears outboard that I have never changed the plug in. I've never been able to find a replacement, good thing it still works.... [/size][/red]

WELL I HAVE NEVER REPLACED MY PLUGS EITHER. I HAVE THIS BOAT FOR 3 YEARS. AND I AM SURE THE GUY THAT HAD IT BEFORE RARELY CHANGED THEM EITHER I JUST CLEAN AND REGAP THEM A COUPLE TIMES A YEAR. I HAVE A 65 HP EVENRUID FROM 67 . I HOPE THAT IF I NEED TO GET SOME I CAN FIND THEM.

Personally I don't like champion plugs for my boat I have only ran them once because I had to (only thing they stocked at lake powell). As soon as I got back I changed back NGK they can cost a bit more but they work well, my plugs have no gap. STAY NGK if you can.

Hey, knowing how to operate the silly things is not a prerequisite to know how to work on one, though I could change spark plugs. I tell Lee what I want and he gives me what I need.
