Strawberry & Brough report 4-17
#1
Well, we got up yesterday and decided to do some fishing! We got to strawberry about 10. There was floating ice all along the edge of the main res. by the high way, where we wanted to fish. So, we opted to go over to soldier creek. We finally decided on a little bay. We walked down, and setted up. My mom, dad, 2 brothers and thier friend were all using power bait. I tried jigs. 5 minutes after she casted in, my mom hooked a 20" cutt. It was fatter than heck! 10 minutes later, it was my dad's turn. This time a 21 1/2" cutt. I finally switched to powerbait, and let it sit. My little brother hooked up, and it was big, once again. This one turned out to be a 19" bow. This fish was kept. My other little brother & his friend each caught little planter bows, at about 12" a piece, then I finally got a bite. I hooked it, and it started running. About 5 minutes later, I had a 23" cutt on the bank. I wanted to release him, but my dad, of corse, had other plans. So, that big beauty was put on the stringer.[Sad] After sitting there till 1, we finally headed to Brough.

The wind was horrible! 15-20 mph sustained, atleast. We got on a nice rocky shore, fishing with the wind, and started chucking lures. I put on my trusty #3 brown trout blue fox, and within 5 minutes I had a 2 lb. rainbow on the shore. We sat there, chucking fox's and martins for about 3 hours, till the storm moved in. I wound up with 14 bows, all about 2 lbs. The others only got 2 or 3 a piece. Man, I've got that lake down! That lake is going to grow some huge fish. The one I accidentally killed was chuck full of minnows, fresh water shrimp and a baby crawdad. I'm amazed he even hit!

The water on the berry was low. We were fishing in the usual snags we got 3 years ago in this little bay. On Brough, though, the water was unbelievably high!! It was within 5 feet of the top of the dam! No water problems there!!!!

Sorry, no pics. I went and got a new disposable camra and a 1" tape measurer yesterday, but my dad went and cooked him already. Next saturday I'll get some. I don't think there's a day anymore I don't get out fished! lol! Its all luck. Maybe some skill with the lures, but other than that luck.

Out4trout & Ocean, here are the directions from the dwr site. I never was really good with them on my own.

"To get to Brough, take State Route 88 south from US Route 40 (Ouray Road). Turn west at the second dirt road past the high power lines. Follow this road approximately two miles, staying to the left at each main fork. Road is quite rutted"

I hope this helps. Its the way we usually get in.

I know kind of where brough is. I have never really fished it.I was usually headed to pelican. How is the fishing there usually and what tackle and tactics work the best there. I am from Upalco. I don't know if you know where that is, but it is out by roosevelt. what time of year is the best to fish it? I am planning on going out and doing some fishing with my dad who is still out there this summer, but he said he has never done very well there.

I've fished there from May till November the last 3 years, and every time we've been there we've nailed them. I usually cast Blue Fox vibrax or Panther Martins with really good success. Even when bait was allowed powerbait killed them. In mid july my family and I had 40+ fish days out there. I've never really fished it from a boat or anything, so I can't help you there. If you want to get into them, I'd recomend fishing strait off of the dam, casting blue fox's as far as you can & slow rolling them in. I use spinning gear, with 6# test on. The fish test the equipment, though. The best day I ever had there was last year, when it was super low water. The fish were in and rolling on minnows, and they were nailing silver gitzits. Last saturday I had a big fish nail a gitzit for me, but I couldn't hook him. Good luck when you hit it. I'm sure if you cast silver lures you'll nail them.
