[font "Times New Roman"][size 3]Through most of the past week Northeast winds and high seas put a damper on spring cod fishing. By week’s end, the low cleared out and the fishing picked up where we left off last weekend. The early bite for cod has been again in the shoal-water followed by a pick in the deep-water for a mix of haddock and cod.[/size][/font]

[size 3][font "Times New Roman"]On Saturday, John Down’s (Stoney Point, NY) two-boat cod safari on B-Fast’s JANET B and DECISIVE went well for anglers using skimmer clams in the 110-120 ft depths on the shoals on the incoming tide. As soon as the tide changed, the shoal fishing was over. Scrod and medium cod 8-12 pounds made up the catch. Once again, small schools of bait were showing on the color fish finders and the cod gave evidence of small herring and whiting on deck. A move to the east, after the slack, produced 12 keeper haddock for John’s group on the JANET B. Tom Midura’s group from Linden, NJ has similar results fishing on B-Fast’s HACKER with Capt. Bob. [font "Times New Roman"][size 3]Water temps are finally moving into the low 40’s and the weather next week looks favorable---Monday may hit 80 degrees! Hopefully, the bait and migrating cod will follow. As I write, four of groups, George Pickel from Selden, NY, Bill MacNamara from Mahwah, NJ and Bob Harrell’s two-boat trip from Hartford, CT are on the grounds.[/size][/font]
[font "Times New Roman"][size 3]Capt. Al reported that the bite in the shoals was slower on Sunday. He made a move early to the 210-230 ft eastern edge and found more haddock than cod. Bob Harrell’s group landed 35 haddock and cod to 15 pounds from the deep-water on the JANET B.[/size][/font]
