Since I'm new to fishing the Jordan I've been trying to find decent access points. I fished 7200 South last night for about 2 hours with one fish on. The friendly reminder is don't get lazy with your knot tying. It had been a while since I had caught a fish (or even a bite for that matter) all of a sudden my pole pulled down toward the water.... holy cow fish on!!! After setting the drag down and starting to reel it in the line just went limp.I reeled it in and all that was left was a little squiggle where the line had unravled from the swivel[mad]. I usually use the trilene knot but this time I think I may have cut the tag end a little short and it pulled through.
So what whats the best all purpose knot and do you use a leader and swivel or just tie the hook to you line?

When I use a swivel with a leader clipped on below it, I'll tie the swivel on with a simple overhand loop. Here how you do it:
Make a loop in the end of your line. The bend of the loop should be about 3 inches from the end of the line. Tie a simple overhand loop knot using the doubled-up line. Pull tight and cut the tag end off, leaving about 1/4 " on there. It's safer to leave the tag end this long so it doesn't slip, and since it won't be close to your bait, only to the swivel, it won't scare the fish.
Next, pinch the loop together, and push it through the eye of the swivel. Then pull the entire swivel back through the loop. Pull it all tight.
This know has practically 100% knot strenght, since the part that touches the swivel is just wrapped around it, not tied down tight.
It's pretty hard to explain, but it works well. It's easy to demostrate. [unsure]

i only use clench knots, it is the only one i use... a good old fashioned clench knot is the best. i have never had a fish unravel a knot. i have had break offs in rocks and stuff, but never at the knot

TRY USING A PALOMAR KNOT INSTEAD, ITS STRONGER, EASIER TO TIE AND IT TAKES CARE OF THE PROBLEMS WITH TAG ENDS PULLING THROUGH. ITS REAL EASY TO TIE,
1. MAKE LOOP IN END OF LINE BY DOUBLING IT OVER IT SELF ABOUT 4 TO 6 INCHES FOR REGULAR HOOK, LONGER IF USING LURES AND SMALLER FOR FLYS AND ICE JIGS SIZE STUFF.
2. RUN LOOP END THROUGH EYE OF HOOK
3. MAKE SIMPLE OVER HAND KNOT
4. TAKE LOOP END PUSH THE HOOK/LURE/JIG THROUGH IT SO YOU HAVE AN OVER HAND KNOT AND THE LURE THROUGH THE LOOP,
5. HOLD LOOP UP NEXT TO MAIN LINE, THEN TIGHTEN KNOT BY PULLING TAG END AND MAIN LINE AT SAME TIME,
SECRET...TO ALL GOOD KNOTS...WET THEM BEFORE TIGHTENING, WITH WATER, SPIT, SODA, BEER WHAT EVER IS AVAILABLE TO LUBE THE KNOT SO THE HEAT FROM TIGHTENING DOES NOT KILL THE LINE. THAT MAY BE WHAT HAPPENED TO YOURS. I HAVE SEEN IT TIME AND AGAIN, I JUST SPIT ON MINE.
IF YOU GOTO THE RAPALA WEB SITE YOU CAN SEE PICTURES OF THIS KNOT AND A FEW OTHER. I THINK STREN DOES IT TOO, I KNOW WHEN YOU BUY A RAPALA LURE IT HAS A LITTLE INSERT IN THE CASE THAT HAS THIS KNOT ON IT TOO.
GOOD LUCK.
LATERS,

Thanks everyone for the info. Honestly the palomar knot is one of my favorites but I guess it just seemed too simple so I only used it to tie on hooks for drop shotting... I didn't even consider using it for everthing. My next fish on WILL NOT get away BWAHAHAHAHA.[laugh]

I agree with badfish! I too use the palomar. I used to go with the trilene but when hooking bigger fish I started getting a lot of slips. Even if I left like a 1/4 tag it was still slipping on bigger fish. Palomar solved it and its actually a little easier to tie than the trilene. In my opinion, of course.

when it comes to your drag 5 words to remember ( in most cases ) SET IT AND FORGET IT if you want to let the fish run with it a little before you set the hook use a slip sinker and put some slack in your line then let the fish pulls it tight before you set the hook
