I usually stick with the standards...liver, worm, shrimp, but We forgot our bait one day, and used some hot dogs. We only caught one kitty on them, but hey, whatever works.

Last year a craze got started at home (Tennessee). Cut up pieces of chicken breast soaked in garlic oil. They even put an article about it in the outdoor section of my hometown newspaper. I'm from a small town; stuff like that is BIG news.

Nastiest thing I ever used was some home made blood bait. Quagulated blood with jellatin added so it wouldn't budge from your hook when casting. I think the guy who made it also added garlic oil some type of fish oil etc, to give it a really great smell.

I have heard soap works quite well for catfish because it puts off a very strong scent. Anyone had any luck with it?
I tried it once for bullheads, but they wouldn't touch it. Maybe it'd work better for channels?

[cool][blue]I doubt if anyone has "endured" more different kinds of catfish baits and "super scents" than yours truly. I have pursued Mr. Whiskers all over the country and have done my share of damage on the Utah Kitties.[/blue]

[#0000ff]My opinion is that almost any bait will work ON SOME FISH...ON SOME OCCASIONS. If you want to catch the most cats, biggest cats and catfish most consistently, you will do well to feed them what they are most in tune with. They're not quite so finicky as a streamborn brown trout, but if they have something special on the menu, and it is generally available, they are not likely to stray from the main course unless they get really hungry.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]The two big items for catfish in Utah are fish meat and crawdads. Of course 'crawlers are often accepted, but most big fish succumb to fish flesh. And, contrary to what some dedicated cataholics believe, fresher is usually better than stinkier. In fact, where it is legal, live minnows and sunfish are the preferred baits for BIG catfish.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Carp meat is both easy to get and makes good cat fodder. But, if you can get some white bass in Utah Lake, a slab of fresh whitie is mighty attractive to a big mama kittyfish. Same with suckers or chubs. One of the hot baits for big nightime cats is a large whole chub, rigged with a trap hook and sliced along the sides to let the juices ooze out.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]If you can't score a carp or some minnows, go to a fresh fish counter and buy some cheap fresh mackerel. That stuff gets soft fast, but it has a great oily cat attractant in it. Cut fillets off the sides and then cut the fillets into 1" chunks for average size cats...larger for lunkers. In fact, save the carcasses after you have filleted them and heave them out on a heavy rig for the biggest baddest "Cha-mu" in the area.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Another good LEGAL fresh fish bait is fresh smelts or small whitefish from the great lakes. Again, cheap and just about the right size for fishing whole, for big fish...or chunking for smaller fish. [/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]If you ever come back from Lake Powell with some leftover anchovies, serve those up for catfish too. Once netted a 25 pounder for a guy off Lincoln Beach that was soaking a whole 'chovy for walleyes below a bobber.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]A bait that is seriously overlooked for catfish in Utah is crawdads. You can use them whole, or just pinch the tails off and put them on a hook. Catfish candy.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Stink baits? They will catch fish. But, you have to fish upwind of yourself, and you better either be single or have a very understanding wife or girlfriend. Some of that stuff can make a skunk barf.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]There is a whole legion of catfish fans who use "dip baits". They make their own by "brewing up" a mixture of fish parts (and other nasty ingredients) until the whole mess liquifies. Usually takes several days in the sun to get it just right. Then they dip hooks covered with foam or special ribbed plastic dip bait "lures" and sling the mess out to the fish. Using that stuff is definitely not a group thing. Nobody wants to be downwind when the bottle is opened.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Processed meats, like weiners, baloney, Spam and poultry products will all work. They already make different kinds with cheese, garlic and other flavors. On any given day, most of it will work to some extent.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Me, I catch most of my cats on lures. Some I catch on lures without "sweetener". Others I catch on bait bugs or roadrunner jigs especially designed to be fished with a piece of crawler or fish meat. Wherever the water is reasonably clear, catfish become "sight feeders" and will smack lures or flies as readily as they will a piece of bait. Add some flavoring to a bottom bounced lure and you double your chances.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]PS, I once won a bet by catching 20 cats in just over an hour, on Willard Bay...using a six weight flyrod and a black fly. The bet was that I couldn't catch even one cat on a fly...I just rubbed it in a bit.[/#0000ff]

i like to use crawdads and frozen chubs or baby carp, but the weirdest thing that i have caught kittys on is probably... bread balls soaked in carp gut juice, i won a derby at lindon harbor on that. i started out fishing for carp becuase i thought that that would be the bigg species for the contest but after about 10 carp or so, i cut one open and soaked my bread ball in the carp juice from its guts, worked like a charm.

There are a few Catfish bait recipes on the recipe board. They are compiled of recipes from members of these boards and from a few other sources.

When I was in UT, I remember using velveta cheese in the Jordan River. The Cats in that area would seem to like it.

Here in SoCal we use whole medium or large shrimp, mackerel, anchovy and night crawlers. Some of the local spots around here, you see people putting marshmellows with the shrimp or crawlers. The marshmellow help to hold the bait just off the bottom. Be carful though with this technique as the carp generally are known for their sweet tooth and may be prone to stealing your bait.

I grew up in Lehi, which used to (before the bottom fell out of the fur market) have quite a few mink farms around. A popular bait for a lot of the old cat chasers was mink food. I don't know exactly what was in it....I'm told that it had some animal by-products...but a lot of guys swore by it.

There was an old black guy from the deep south that used to live in Lehi. He raised chickens behind his house. During the summer months he would save all of those that died and put them in a burlap bag. He'd then leave that out in the sun for a while and when he felt that the stink was just right, he'd weigh it down and go throw it in his favorite catfish hole. He said that each bag of dead chickens kept the kitties in his sweetspot for at least a week.

[cool]Hi there folks
Here is something that I learn about yesterday at Mabie Pond in Clearfield. I was fishing for catfish with worms and doe balls and not getting a thing. there was a group next to me that was pulling in a bunch of two to four pounders, and I could not figure what they were using well they all limited out they started to leave. So I ask what they were fishing with the last one told me they were using bacon and he gave me his bacon he had on his hook. Well I used it and you can see for yourself that I had good success with that piece bacon [cool]

[cool][blue]First bacon, then they will want eggs and toast too. At least they usually like the bacon raw. It's tough to get on the hook if it is cooked too crisp.[/blue]

[#0000ff]The smoke and salt in bacon and ham is a proven attractant to kitties. And, as you found, it is tough. It stays on the hook well.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]A small piece of bacon also catches bluegills...and trout. Plus, it is a winner for crawdads.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Nice fish.[/#0000ff]

i used to have a bullhead in my pond in my backyard... he loved to eat dog food. the dry kind. i would just throw a few chunks of dog food in and he would come out of his hole in the rocks and slurp it off of the top. he got around 3 or 4lbs. his name was small fry.

[cool]Wow. Bacon, huh? How big of piece did you use? Was that just put on a small treble hook?

[cool]I believe that about the dead chickens in a gunny sack. My stepdad said that when he was a kid in New Mexico, he'd go catfishin' with his grandparents and if they found a dead bird or especially a dead jackrabbit on the road, they'd stop and scoop it up, and throw it in the back of the truck and use it or it's guts for bait, and catch some really nice cats, but I've never tried it myself.

[Smile] A small piece no bigger than your thumb nail and does matter what type of hook. I used both a treble and straight hook on a trout rig.[Wink]
