Some of you may recognize me as someone who asked several questions last summer about fishing from shore here in the twin cities area. I appreciate the comments. Sometime between last summer and this summer, the knots that I was using for tying swivels and hooks onto my line quit working. Or maybe I'm messing up big time. I was out fishing for the first time this year past weekend. I was at Coon Rapids Dam and managed to capture a few bullheads (great fertilizer for the vegetable garden). And then I switched to a larger hook and larger worms and hooked me a decent size carp. First time I've caught a large fish! You should have seen my excitement!

Well, the stupid thing decided it didn't want out of the water just yet so it took off with my line, pulled a good 20 feet off my spool, and tangled himself up in some timber. My line didn't snap as I tried to entice him into coming out of there. My knot came untied!

I tried a different knot and caught another decent sized carp. Just as I was getting ready to pull him onto dry land (I now realize I should buy a fishing net), the knot untied and he took off. Two biggies in a row got away cuz my knots didn't stay tied.

Help! What am I doing wrong? Someone teach me how to tie a good knot or ten. I don't wanna lose any more good fish. Thanks!!

Try this. http://www.marlinnut.com/knots/

Also, what are you doing differently? What kind of line are you using? Did you switch to Spectra? (Spectra needs different knots from mono) Is your line old?

Personally, I like the San Diego & Uni knots. These both work for Spectra, too.

Fishslayer

Thanks Fishslayer! I'll be sure to read through it thoroughly. I better put it as my home page temporarily. Best fishing to you!

Forgot to answer the question. hehe. I'm using monofilament at this time. I'm still a beginner. Bought the stuff mid-summer last year.

Mono deteriorates from UV (sunlight) and abrasion. It also becomes stiff with age, which is particularly bad on spinning reels.

Here in the saltwater we usually replace our line more than once a season, sometimes after one trip if we pull on a few fish.

Line is cheap. Losing that fish of a lifetime hurts bad.

Fishslayer

edit: there are some other knot pages, including some kewel animated ones. Just go to http://www.google.com and enter "fishing+knots"

Edited by Fishslayer on 06/16/02 10:56 AM.

Sure appreciate all your help! Much of the information you've given me nobody else has offered to give. They all just "suggest" what they like to use as far as line and knots. After viewing the knots on the website you pointed me to I realized what I was doing wrong with the knot I was trying to tie. Thanks again for your help!
