E-lake (Report) legal chum?
#1
went to E-lake today with my boy again.. we had one of the best day's fishing E-lake i have ever had!! other than ice fishing that is.. even so we got onto some nicer fish today!! the first fish my boy hook up with today was a 3 lbs rainbow!! and what a nice looking fish.. we hook up about 40 fish betwine the two of us and missed i dont know how meny.. what a great day with my boy!! all the fish we cought was on minnow.. found out a new trick today with the minnow and minnow trap.. started see the fish crash my trap and chace the minnows around it so started putting a minnow on a bubble and whate for the fish to come around and cast to it and hook up about 90% of the time then as the wind died down i could see the fish schooling 6 to 8 feet off shour..so i casted out a little more then where my traps were at and was just killing the fish!! like chumming but legal calling them fish right up to the traps...

got a pic of that nice rainbow my boy cought.. what a nice fish!!

i allways fish the boat ramp side when i can get in to it!! the only time i fish the dam side is when the snow is to deep to get to the lake from the north side.. yeah tryed the big minnows again but the smaller ones was still working better than the big ones..just becaus it's ez'er to hook the fish with the smaller minnows..

Minnows seem to be producing well in many places this year. It's nice to see fish eat fish instead of some multi-colored synthetic glob on a treble hook, feathers and glue on a single hook, or metal blades and beads on another treble hook.[Wink] I used to use the ol' "Circle of Life" approach back in Kansas with much success. Minnows, chubs and sunfish were the buffet items back then. And you could use as many rods/reels or canepoles as my chubby little hands could carry! Now that was fishin'!!![blush]

Oh, yeah; Tommy, YOU DA MAN!!

yeah i know what you mean there my friend..i talked to alot of people there at E-lake that had been camping there over the weekend and that they have only cought 2 or 3 fish useing the multi-colorer synthetic globs..hehehe then they got mad at me because i pull up and started knocking the fish dead and they are still not getting any thing.. but if they would have just came over and asked me what was going on i would have set them up with a minnow and shown them how we were doing it.. as some others did.. and was rewarded with some nice fish and a fun new way of catching fish.. one guy came over and tryed to buy some minnows from me said he was up from AZ and wanted to catch some fish.. but did not have any way of getting minows so i pulled one of my traps up put all the minnow that was in it in a bag and gave them to him.. about 50 minnows then he still tryed to pay me for them.. i said that they are free to me and EZ to catch so go ahead and keep them..man was he one happy camper.. seen them down the way hooping it up about 10min's later so i think they started hit the fish..

Hey Ron,

How many minnows do you typically catch at a time in a trap, and how long do you usually leave the trap in the water? Is the trap close enough that you can see whether or not there are minnows in it before removing it from the water? I purchased a minnow trap and tried it at Strawberrry, but we didn't catch any. I believe that we were using it in the wrong place and there was way too much moss where we put it.

ya go to huntington resevoir and cross the dam and you see tonz of minnows on the shore line cast out a minnow and reel in slowly we did that and hooked into some nice size tiger trout

Just wondering, what kind of minnows are you catching?

And to add some questions to Kent's post, what do you put in the minnow traps to get the fish to come in? Are you using a square or round minnow trap, and how are you rigging up the minnow on the hook? Just like to see how everyone else is doing it. I used minnows for my first time ever this year and loved how big the fish were that I was catching. Any more hints or suggestions would be great. I bought a casting net but am too retarded to catch much. I also have a square trap but am lucky to get 5 or 10 fish each time I put it out. Any suggestions on how to catch more minnows would be awesome.

well kent at E-lake you can see the schools of minnows swiming around the shour.. so you just put the trap out where you see they are comeing through and i think most just swim in becaus that the way they ar swimming and it in the path that they normally swim.. but i put a bun balled up as tite as i can get it..

i use the round traps..
