Fished the bear Wednesday from 9 Am to 3 Pm. Caught 2 small cuts 1 mack 12 lbs 7oz on the east side. Went over to the West side caught 1 mack 13 lbs 8oz. I'm sure of the weight because I bought a set of $110.00 digital scales and checked them against a certified scale they are right on the money. I got tired of guessing or having people say that fish has to be at least 20. Now Ill know for sure. Fished in water from 70 to 100 feet right off bottom. Wind came up around 3 when my dad got his and we ran out of beer around the same time so we loaded up. Had a fun day.

Thanks for the report, there are a couple boats of BFT fishermen headed up there in a few hours so I hope we have a report that good when we get back. Sounds like a nice set of scales you bought, now I'll know who to check with the next time I catch a big mack and want to know it's weight, ha,ha. Were you jigging? WH2

When you say you were fishing right off the bottom, I guess that means you were trolling with the lures very near or hitting the bottom?

I try to pick a depth where the most consontration of fish are and keep my lure approx. 6" to 1' off bottom.

Sounds like fun. I am with you on the scales. I have some real cheap ones, but I need some better ones. It is funny how much weight fish gain when someone doesn't have a scale,

I have found out over the years that most people including myself are a poor judge of fish weight. A couple of years ago I had an old boy come over to my boat asking if I had scales because he had a mack over 20 lbs. I had a set of cheaper digital and a spring scale. I weighed the fish on the digital and it weighed 13 lbs 8oz he said my scales were all beeped up try the other ones. I did and it weighed 13 lbs 4 oz. He got really upset and said he knew damn well it weighed over 20 and left.[laugh] Some people just can't take it.

Yea people tend to get pretty ticked off when you tell them their 8 lb trout is 3lbs at best. I have gotten fairly good at guessing weight, but not by hefting. The only way I can get close is by size. I know about how much certain species weigh based on size, but if it is a new fish and completely different size I don't even try unless I have a set of scales,
