Strwberry Report 10-1-04

Fished Strawberry with Fishcrazy from our Pontoons/floattubes. This was a landmark trip for me since I have never fished it before. We got on the water around 1:30 and I immediately caught my first Strawberry Cut on a gold superduper. What a thrill!!! Them there fish sure fight good on lighter tackle and he was only 15". we caught a few more in the next 30 min. then there was a long lull until we figured out a pattern. Actually mike found the pattern when he noticed that he was gettin some vicious strikes while quickly retrieving his bait for another cast. He radioed the info on over to me and then it was fast action for a while. Tubes, spoons, whatever just retrieved quickly right under the surface, no more than 6". Not sure how many we caught but it was quite a few. Most for me were in the 17-19" range and one that was 21" and Mike got one or two that was pushing 23".

I never though trout fishing could be so much fun. The larger fish would spin me around in my tube and took 10 or more min. to land ripping drag all the way. Thanks Mike for showing me the ropes. I may just head up there again on Sunday and see if I can catch a few more.

Here's one of the first cutts in the 17" range. There I am Sporting TubeBabes waders, LOL. Thanks for letting me test them out Dolorous. I think breathable will suit me fine for my fishing needs.



This is one of the Larger ones pushing 20". I tried to get some pix in the tube but I quickly realised that it is next to impossible to since they don't stand still for a second. Had one that flopped up and almost went down my waders. I now have a great appreciation for the stillness of a lipped Bass. No matter how large the Bass a thumb on the lip and they won't move an inch.

That place can be addictive . I had luck with the bows last time there with a curly tails reeled in fast in the surface water .

I think I caught a rainbow but wasn't sure. I wanted to keep one since I hear the trout up there are good eating. I should have taken a picture. It looked exactly like a bow in coloring but had some spots near the head. I read in the proc if it has cut markings they must be released. What are cutt markings? Do you think that fish was a keeper?

Maybe I'm early, but let's see if we can set something up for an ice fishing extravaganza this winter. If you drill it, they will come.[cool]

If you are not sure , it most likely is not a bow . If it is a rainbow with red slashes under its jaw it still is called a cutt by the DWR .The cutts in Strawberry will have orange color in there fins most of the time with a red or orange slash under there lower jaw , but I must admit I did question some cutts until I hooked a bow . I could tell it wasn't a cutt and most of the time it is a much better fighter than the cutts . There have been some post of my bows on here somewhere . Strawberry isn't a place I would recommend to go get fish for the table . Many other waters to get them from . Unitas would be a great place to go and get some decent fish for dinner , and not have to worry about if it is a legal fish to take home from Strawberry . There have been a few big bows (6# to 14#) have been caught this year , and I know I am only a few more casts away from hooking one . I'm just hoping to hook one on a jig .

One more note is most of the trout seem to eat moss this time of year , and it does add flavor to the fish . I would wait till it is iced over for some tasty trout .

The orange/yellowish fins are what I look for. Seems like every trout in there has some sort of spot/slash/red under the mouth now. I personally dont fish for food so it doesnt bug me, but some people I have fished with sit and wonder for minutes whether to keep or release something based on the markings.

I hope I hook into a 23+. Considering the way the smaller (17-20") fight and spin me around I think I may be water skiing with the larger ones. I didn't see large clumps of moss floating around but the water is green with tiny clumps. Hope that helps. If you look closely at the picture of the trout in water you can see the suspended particles. Was like that throughout the entire area.

Went back on Sunday 10/4 the ending tally was 15 cutts lots of missed strikes and 4 that I fought for a while but didn't land. The largest was just under 23" and the smallest a 14" that came home as a dinner sampler of Strawberry cutts. There was a constant wind that made floating a bit tough and the cutts didn't seem to fight as hard as Friday. Most fish were caught before 3:00 then there was a long lull until about an hour before sunset. The wind stopped blowing and the fish started rising. Made them easy to locate and it was fast action again.

Thanks for the links Randy. Now I'm definate that the fish was a Bow (no orange fins or red slash under gills). I was about the spots but the link says that the bows have spots across the body. Now that I think of it that was a nice Bow at around 18" biggest I ever caught!

Be careful Al alot of people keep cutts thinking they are bows. Attached is a pitchure of a bow and a cutt HA69 is holding the bow. Bows will have a lot of spots on their head. If you get caught with a cutt that is in the slot it could be a $100.00 fine.
