In the last year or two, I've been spending more time fishing off the Southern California coast. I try to read the fishing discussion boards and am stoked to find this one. Can anyone tell me what the numbers mean when someone says that they're catching fish off of the "190" or "240"? I'm not sure how to interpret things like this. Thanks.

mr-rosenbloom, Hi and welcome to the Big Fish message boards.
Those numbers are in reference to some of the banks off of some of the coastal islands. They are general reference points for some of the hot fishing spots for certain species.[cool]

Thanks for the message. We've got a pretty good GPS on the boat, but it sounds like a good map would also be in order. Do you think that the numbers would be found there?

They sell some good maps at most of your fishing and sporting good stores. ie: Turners, Sports Chalet, Sportsmart....etc.
They have a good topography and show the 190 bank, 240 bank as well as many of the other good spots. They are GPS friendly and come in handy.
I have the inshore ones from Point Concepcion down to Baja CA. They sure come in handy.[cool]

Hey there mr_rosenbloom,
Welcome to BFT. There's lots of good boards here including the state specific boards.
As TubeN2 has said, the numbers you mentioned can relate to the banks which in turn can describe 1) how far from shore ie 14 mile bank, how deep ie 11 fathoms spot, or the 190 ie familar coordinates. Of course the wierd names like the mushroom bank and farnsworth come from shape of the underwater structure person attributed to having discovered a bank or reef, etc.
Check out the book Between Two and Twenty Fathoms by Mark Wisch for more detailed info. And...... check out the California board when you have time. Do you float tube? heh heh heh

Why didn't I post months ago? You guys have given me some much needed info. I'll pick up that book ASAP. As for the float tube, I have a very under-used float tube. It's pretty dry. It may just be time to dig it out.

Hey there Mr Rosenbloom. The place to get a book is at this website: www.amazon.com It's the cheapest place you'll find, believe that. You can probably find that book there for like 99 cents. And, while you're fishing around for that book, check out this web site as well: www.marinecharts.com It's a no-bull way of getting any kind of chart you need, anywhere in the world, digital or paper, or what ever.
