Went to huntington to pick up my elk meat yesterday. When I drove by upper huntington res. there was one fisherman and his son ice fishing.(for those who are ready for ice fishing)Don't know how he was doing, I drove on down to e-lake and fished about 1 hour, I caught 1 16" cut and much to my surprize 1 23" rainbow that weighed just over 6lbs ,it had unbeleivable girth, It seemed almost as wide as it was long. Looked like a rainbow sunfish. Any way after 30 yrs. of fishing there it was my first rainbow on e-lake and he's still in there (released unharmed) All were caught on a jakes lure. Had to leave as my boy's wanted to go bunny blasting (did well with the bunny's also) Lonnie

Hey James,
I'll be headin' up there to fish it this weekend, so I'll be stopping by to see you. You have the $7.00 ice rods again this year? Got the store already for Ice time?
It's your favorite time of year

The lake is ioo% froze over, however e-lake or cleveland had no ice, which may indicate unsafe ice on huntington. there was no snow on the ice, and the fisherman who was there with his son and an ice shack only ventured out about 30-40' off the dam side. Hope that helps. Post a report if you go. I would like to go but this week will be tough. Good Luck Lonnie

I just called Big Pine Sports in Fairview. The man I spoke to said the afternoons had been getting quite warm and he wouldn't recommend anyone venturing out on the ice at Huntington.

Yea, but is the man a serious ice fisherman. I have had people call strawberry and they tell them that there is no Ice on the same day I had been fishing on it. It all depends on a glass half full or half empty point of view.

[cool]Kent,
my wife's family has property up at the top of Fairview Canyon, just before you get over the top of that ridge. There is quite a temperature difference from the bottom of the canyon where Big Pine Sports is, and the top of the canyon where Hunington is close to. I'd say, probably at least a 5 degree difference if not more. If it's been getting down to 33 here in the Salt Lake Valley the past few nights, I'm sure that it's been getting down in the teens at least (if not lower).
At any rate, I can't wait to hear some fishing reports from there! Good luck this weekend, Maddawg!!

So who if anyone is going up to Huntington this weekend? I was hoping on a current report on ice thickness to see if I could talk my wife into letting me go Saturday morning. If anyone knows how much ice there is please post it ASAP so I can try to make plans.
Thanks, and if I'm up there I will have my radio on channel 12. If anyone is heading up I am in Springville and maybe we can set up a car pool, that is of course if I can make it and if there is enough ice.

Just for everyone's info, I just talked to somebody at Sportsmans that said there is about 4 inches of ice on Huntington. They told me that somebody that works there fished it within the past couple of days. For what it's worth.

[cool]Uhm, kind of. My wife's maiden name is Stewart, and her grandfather who is deceased was a sheep rancher in Fairview, and had property up near the top of the canyon before it was deemed "Manti-Lasalle National Forest." They used to graze sheep up there in the summer time, and then in the winter they'd take the sheep somewhere out in the west desert past Tooele somewhere till spring.
Anyway, if you are familiar with that area, the property is up almost at the top of the canyon there's a little dirt road turnout on your left that goes in about 50 yards and then there's a steel gate padalocked right there. My wife's fam owns 269 air acres up there, so we camp there in the summer, and go fish the surrounding lakes. Locals up there know the property as "that place with the big huge tree swing." I think most people don't know it's private property, 'cause people park on the side of the road and hike in and Elk and Deer hunt it. The family has found that the area gets vandalized less since they took down the private property signs years ago. I guess the family trust states that as long as you are married to a Stewart or Anderson I can use it anytime I want[ ]. Anyway, just barely up the road on your right as you are almost to the top of the canyon there's an old ski lift thing, that you've probably seen before on your way up to Hunington or Electric Lake.

Yep I know right where you talking and what your talking about. The place that your grand dad and law would take the sheep it out by Sevir Lake near black rock and Delta. My gramps did the same thing. Next time your around your Parents in law ask em if they have heard of Ray Coates. Thats my granddad and he use to give the fish cops from back east hell
That old ski lift and cabin there by your fams property is not part of a school call Washatch Academy. I know right where you are talkin'. I spend of good portion of my summer on that mountian but I uselly camp in a ways past Millers Flat

[cool]Wow, that's really cool, maddawg! What a small world it is. I'll ask my dad in law on sunday if he knew who who your grandad was. If he doesn't, I guarantee my wifes great uncle and aunt probably knew him.
So are you goin fishin' up at hunington tomorrow? I gotta call the state park at Scofield and see if there's ice up there yet. If it isn't safe by next Saturday, we're gonna ice fish at hunington instead. Good luck up there.
