what waters tend to have dangerous ice?
#1
I read a post a while back saying that Mantua had a lot of spots of thin ice. What other waters tend to have thin spots - or otherwise dangerous ice?

[cool]This time of year?...All of them!! Ha! Seriously though, I'd say any lake that has hot/warm springs in it. Mantua is one. People on this board talked last year about hot springs in Bear Lake, and some anglers falling in right there, especially late in the season. Utah Lake has warm springs, although some years it doesn't freeze over. Even Strawberry has some warm springs, from what I've heard, though I don't have a snowmobile or 4 wheeler, so I've never been out as far as you have to go to find them there. I think at the 'berry, that the warm springs are somewhere in the vicinity of Haws Point.

I'm sure others on this board can elaborate further on this subject.

Did you have any specific lakes in mind?

The only real bad areas I have seen are on the east side of bear lake, the soldier creek marina at strawberry, and mantua. You can usually see the bad spots. If you are there right after a new snow look out, they are hard to see. At bear lake and strawberry, where the bubble ups are the snow melts away and you can see a big black spot where the open water is. Some of the spots are only big enough for your fooot but I have seen some that are big enough to loose a truck. I found a huge one out by the rockpile at bear lake last year. If you dare to walk up close to them they are really neat looking. You can see how the hole tapers from the surface down. As always there could be soft spots anywhere and at any time so use caution.

Just a little clarification -- the Rockpile at Bear Lake is located on the southwest corner, not the east side. I have seen many soft spots on the east side, the south side, and around the southwest corner. Considering these are the only areas that I have icefished up there, I have a hunch they exist at other areas also. Also look out for those pressure ridges. Last winter I watched two guys fall through a pressure ridge -- one guy fell through twice (he must have had a brain cramp on the second time). Considering only their pride was hurt we all had a good laugh over it.
