Minnesota Proposes New Walleye Regulations For Leech Lake
#1
ST. PAUL, MN—The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is proposing experimental walleye regulations for Leech Lake. Officials say the change will protect brood stock, which biologists are concerned about due to weak year classes since 1997. If implemented, the regulations would go into effect in May 2005 and continue for the next eight years, after which they would be evaluated based on angler surveys and annual population monitoring.

The proposed regulations would limit total possession of walleyes to four fish, only one of which could exceed 28 inches. They would also require anglers to release all walleyes 18 to 28 inches long.

The DNR will accept public input on the proposed regulations until 4:30 p.m. on December 27. Comments can be submitted by calling Harlan Fierstine at: (218) 547-1683, or by e-mailing Harlan.Fierstine@dnr.state.mn.us.
