On the way back from Strawberry today, I saw about 20 people ice fishing by the dam at Echo. There were tracks in several other places from people who was there earlier in the day. 75% of the reservoir looks to be iced over now. Merry Christmas Everyone.

I was one of those on the ice. Good clear ice about 5 inches thick.
Three of us in about three hours of fishing only managed a couple of smaller sized trout and no perch. Talked to others who reported similar luck Very slow and the few bites were very light. Not a typical day on Echo.
Any reports on Rockport ice ?

Thanks for the update on Rockport Fishking. As soon as I read this thread about Echo being frozen, I thought about Rockport being next. I look forward to your update on Tuesday, hopefully it will be iced over by then.

I fished Echo Friday morning and can confirm the slow fishing. I was by the boat ramp. I found perch in about 25 ft of water. The only problem is they were young of the year dinks, barely 3 inches long. I ventured out to about 35 ft in search of larger fish, but had little success. Once the ice thinned to about three inches, I decided it was far enough. I did manage to land a 7 inch perch, but the dinks were a constant bother and frustration. I drove by Rockport on the way home. As reported there is little ice.

Me thinks you need to fish shallower and fish those 3" perch dead on a hook . Only way I would do it . And hang on !! Perch will go deep later in the year .

[cool]I'm not a Perch expert (hopefully will be someday), but I read a great article in the January issue of In-Fisherman that talked about the big ones a lot of the time will hang out closer to shore in heavily weeded areas eating all of the baby perch, and other baitfish and larvaes that hang out there. So, I agree with Hellsangler69 about using those little dinks and stick them on your spoons, and see what happens! The big Perch don't always hang out just in the deeper water. Can't wait to get out there myself. I believe Fishingwaters said he was there last week and caught a bunch in the 9-inch range.

[cool]Great advice, tubemeister. I will remember that. Man, I wish I was fishing Yuba 10-20 years ago back in the good old days! Hopefully in 5-10 years it will be like that again! In the mean time, hopefully we can pull some big perchies through the ice at Echo & Rockport this year, with maybe some nice 'eyes from Starvation.
