Anglers who were fishing at the White Pine County lake over the weekend told NDOW that the fishing was somewhat slow, but the fish that were taken were around 19 to 20 inches. Fish are being caught in deep water near the dam and in the channel between the upper and lower lakes. Sparkle PowerBait, worms and marshmallows are catching the fish while the favorite fly has been the flashback hare’s ear nymph.
The lake is covered with ice, but conditions are not believed to be safe for ice fishing.
[#990033]ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR[/#990033]
A thin layer of ice covers most of the lake. The ice is too thin for ice fishing.
Fishing continues to be fairly good for striped bass in the Boulder Basin as both shore anglers and boaters are catching fish, including some fish that weigh 4 pounds or more.
A shore angler told the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) that stripers have been running the shoreline in the early morning hours along Special Events Beach. He caught a 4-pound striper Friday (12/24/04) morning by casting a silver and blue popper lure. Special Events Beach is closed to vehicles from dusk until 6 a.m.
Rainbow trout have been sticking to patches of brush found between Hemenway Fishing Point and Special Events Beach. Stripers are being caught in this half-mile stretch as they pursue the trout.
Large stripers have been appearing following NDOW’s rainbow trout plants, but they are only being caught for about two hours.
Boaters continue to have success for stripers in the vicinity of Las Vegas Wash. All of the boaters have been catching fish, although very few have caught limits of 20 stripers during the past week.
NDOW will plant trout Thursday (12/30/04) at Hemenway, Horsepower, Pumphouse and North Saddle coves.
Anglers have had little reason to brave this week’s rainstorm and take to the water because fishing has generally been poor. Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) creel census clerks said they have seen very few fish and the veteran anglers have reported they are having a difficult time in getting the stripers to bite.
Anglers who have been fishing at Willow Beach have enjoyed some success for rainbow trout following the weekly plants.
NDOW will be stocking trout Thursday (12/30/04) at Cottonwood Cove, Placer Cove and Willow Beach.
The reservoirs are covered with 1 to 2 inches of ice. Conditions are not safe for ice fishing.
[#990033]URBAN PONDS[/#990033]
Fishing has been very good following NDOW’s trout plants. The next plants will take place on Friday, Jan. 7, at Floyd Lamb State Park, Lorenzi Park and Sunset Park in Las Vegas and Veterans Memorial Park in Boulder City.
