Humble pie/Lake X report 1-25
#1
Some dufus (me) reported here that lake X was almost entirely open water. It was suggested by a friend that Rock Cliffs may actually have fishable ice. I had an unexpected free afternoon after some work cancellations and had the time to check it out. I brought daddy's big fishing buddy with me to give mom a break. We got there and found that yes, there was ice at RC about 200-300 yards past the wakeless bouys. The sign prohibiting motorized travel to the ramp was still up and the ranger had his truck in the parking lot, so off we walked. My 3 yr. old thought it was fun to play in the snow and ride on daddy's shoulders, but I was a bit tired by the time we got to the ice. There had been people on there so off we went. I went to an area that I thought had promise and started drilling. 12 inches of hard ice! No problem there. The depth was only 13.8 ft. though. I thought, "this will be too shallow for perch this time of year, but maybe I can get a trout or two." as I put in. Immediate bite. My next thought was as I was reeling in a perch after about 1 minute was "Ok, there are perch here but they surely will be dinks" Wrong again, the first one was comparable to Rockport size! I caught about 25 in approx. 30-40 minutes of fishing and half were keepers. (a very nice ratio for the X) I would have liked to really explore and fish some more but I promised my girl a horsey ride on the jet sled and a few trips down a small sledding hill before dark. So there you have it, I am pretty clueless, and we have another perch option besides Rockport if you don't mind a little walking.

FWIW: The two open spots at DC are about 25% reduced in size and the existing ice is looking stronger. A bit more cold and ice anglers might be in business there soon. The main lake at the X is not any better than Saturday, except the cove by the pwc launch has a skiff of ice that lasted the entire day.

[cool]Nice report. I was told by a member of this board about a month ago that Rock Cliffs had safe, and I even posted it here. Glad my info was correct. How much do they charge this time of year?

Hi d-g-f

Thanks for the report... but I have a few Q's -
How close to the ice can you park? and if I am pulling a sled/shanty am I unable to use a 4 wheeler?

I know last year there was parking right up to the ramp but I take it that that is not the case this year... PB

OFT: The sign said that it was $4.00 for walk ins and $7.00 for an "all day" vehicle. There was no one there at the pay window for interpretation on what we did.

Papa B: According to the sign posted when they started the renovation up there, no motorized vehicles are allowed past a gate set up just past the campground. We were carrying float tubes in there this summer by foot and I assume that the rule still hasn't changed based on the sign. This would mean about a 1/4-1/3 mile walk and 4 wheelers are not allowed. That would make it tough to haul in a shack for sure. That said, Kastmaster this Saturday saw guys parking in the "new" parking lot right at the ramp. If the powers that be don't mind this, even with that sign up, then you are looking only at a 75 yd. haul to the ice and it is fairly flat once off the ramp. I only saw the rangers truck, not him/her, so I wasn't able to ask about this.

I knew Jordanelle would have ice in that arm when I asked a week ago!
But every body drives the highway to Heber and wanted to give bad reports. Now we know there is another good perch fishery besides Rockport. Thanks doggonefishin.

Please forgive me for asking but where are the Rock Cliffs. I'm new to the board and ice fishing for perch. Thanks for any info.

Rock Ckiif is at the South east end of Jordonelle.
Head twards Heber coming from Salt Lake (east on Hiway 40). Make a left turn at the traffic light at the bottom of the hill. About 3 miles down the road you will turn left into the Rock Cliff State Park. (might be a little further, but it is at the bottom of the downhill grade)
Hope this helps

I just called Jordanelle State Park (435-649-9540) and was told that the sign still applies, and that if police officers drive over there (and I was told that they do) they will ticket any vehicles that have ventured beyond the sign.

hey kent-

Thanks for the clarification... calling the park was just what we needed to take the guess work out of planing- good thinking!

maybe I'll just drive across the lake from the main marina (lotsa luck... aye?) or just pack light [unsure]

I'm sure it'll be worth it- right?...PB
