Bean and I went up to the Rock for a few hours this afternnon chasing slime rockets in the east end near the inlet. After graphing and catching noting we moved tword the west along the old river channel cutting our way until we found 21ft. There is a big grass flat that lies just off the old channel and we decided to fish there after marking some fish. Low and behold, they were Perch. I got a few right off the bat on a black ice fly tipped with a meal worm and Bean was getting the same on a Chraturse and white jig tipped with a Power Worm in Pink. These weren't your ordinary Rock Perch. Many of the ones we got topped 10" and some were over 11".
Not a huge amount mind you, but big Perch beats small Perch in my book anyway. The nice thing was since we were so shallow we could put all the small ones back with no noticable harmfull efects.
The bite died about 2 so I switched to the magic Rock bait, a pink and white shrimp-bo tipped with a meal worm covered in Sardine smelly jelly. That turned on the slimer bite with a few bonus Pech thrown in.
Total for 4 hours of fishing between 13:00 and 16:00, 13 big Perch with twice or three times that thrown back, at least 2 or 3 dozen slimers with 2 big Bows over 17" and 1 Tiger that was 10" or so. No Browns, but overall a great day to be fishing with my kid, which keep getting rarer and rared these days now that he is married.
If your going to fish the Rock do it soon. The ice is getting rotten as heck. There is still 6" of ice but the top is cyrstalyine and it will only be a week or two before it's unfishable.
I didn't bring the GPS since the lake is so small but to get where I was, take the last pull off with no bathrooms, walk straight across the lake until roughly in the middle. Cut holes until you find 21.2 ft. You be just off the old river channel. Good Luck!
