Scofield Report 03-10-05

I went up to Scofield this morning to take the wife on her first ice fishing trip (and the first trip she has ever caught a fish). The weather was nice and warm after the sun came up and the fishing was........."eh".[unsure]

We probably caught 12 fish between us. It was slow but there was still some action. No monsters but we did take home four keepers. The fish weren't hitting very hard either. Wimpy wimpy strikes.

They really seemed interested in olive colored 1" power nymphs on glowing jig heads. A couple were caught on glow in the dark Shrimpos.

I had a great time fishing but the high point was the look on my wife's face when the ice started to moan groan and crack. That look was priceless!!! [sly] By the way she gave her first productive fishing trip a 7 out of 10. I bet it would have scored an 8 if she hadn't been freaked out by the ice.

[cool]Glad you got the Mrs. into some fish! Now Scofield is a lake we haven't heard much about lately! Thanks for the report. How thick is the ice these days, about 3 feet? Bet you had the whole place to yourself, eh? I hope that lake gets some serious runoff this spring, because there aren't too many nice fish left in there these days.[]

I've been to Scofield 4 times in the last five weeks. Today we had the lake alone until around 9am when another small group arrived. It seems the fishing gets progressivly worse each time I go up. I hope I can break that spell because I'm going up again Monday. Today was about as slow as I've seen.

The ice up there is at the very least 18 inches but probably closer to 2+ feet.

I tired to fish Huntington the week before last but I forgot to bring my backhoe to get through the 5+ feet of snow on the ice. I decided to go down to Scofield instead.

[cool]Thanks for the update. I have found in my experiences up there that the ice fishing is best from Thanksgiving (if it has safe ice by then-this year it didn't have safe ice till about 1 week after T-Day) through the end of December (perfect timing to keep one busy for Trout till Strawberry freezes up safely). It seems to me that as I've ice fished it past Christmas, that each trip there progressively gets slower through the rest of the ice season. My guess is that probably happens due to the lake being so shallow (right now 16 ft is the deepest I have found) that the oxygen levels decrease as the season wears on. Just my $.02, but I'm not a biologist.[crazy]

That's good info thanks. I have had most of my best luck close to shore. Monday I may try a few new spots to see if they are sitting deeper or shallower than my usual stopming grounds. I started mid-range yesterday but after drilling three holes I lost an auger blade [mad]. I don't mind telling you it sucks to fish from just three holes which weren't very good to begn with.

Needless to say before I got home I stopped and bought some back ups so that will never happen again (I hope).
