Thanks for posting your report, I know there were a lot of people out there yesterday. I'm surprised by the lack of reports, maybe they will come in later today. Were you fishing by the south marina or the north? WH2

Were you fishing toward the island or East toward the feed lot? A few years ago before the low water we use to do good between the S/M and the Feed lot but that low water changed everything. WH2

Saturday was a great day on Willard. After we unhooked the seagull my buddy caught. We fished from 9:00 am thru 6:00 pm. We were working South to North, right in front of all the other boats that were right outside the south marina. We boated 8 and missed two HUGE strikes. The fish were not fighting like a wiper yet, at least not ours. No walleye but all the wipers were quite fat. We kept 4 between 3 of us that totaled 16 lbs. Our biggest was just under 5 lbs. Most of the luck came on silver and black Shad Raps. with a few coming in on the red-nosed white producer. The water temp. was 50 degrees most of the day. We picked them up trolling between 1.6 - 2.0. Too bad it is storming again.

Dang a Lucky Craft lost to the wipers?! Let me direct you to Hooked Fishing Tackle where James will help you with a key secret lure. Best thing, it's relatively cheap. James will get you hooked up for sure.
Get a strong line for your reel as well. Can't be losing them to the wipers.[cool]

east west north and south and right through the middle,of the island we went down and tried south west corner for a while.but nothing bought a drift sock from cabbelas to slow the boat down it sure works good its a 65 incher i through it out without attatching it to the boat and it dam near dragged me in i was screaming at woodpile to hit neaulral which he finaly did needless to say i was half way out of boat we were trolling 1.8 2 miles an hour on the gps the miles per on fish finders arent real close. usualy show your going alot slower than you really are.just came back from south marina 1 boat is out. drift sock puts alot of static on finder becuse of all the turbulanc around transducer that and your shooting a cone as big as a dinner plate in htat shallow water.

Thanks for posting your report Chad, sounds like you guys had a good day. The water temps are still to low for the wipers to fight as good as they will, once they reach 60*. Were you using your fish finder to check your speed or a GPS? With temps up in the low 70* by Thursday and Friday, more good days are on the way. It looks like all those days of low water last fall and few people on the water really helped Willard.

Yeah it looks like I will be out there again Thursday if not sooner. I was using the GPS for my speed. It seems to be pretty consistent. I was hesitant to troll so fast, but the quicker lure movement was what got us our fish. They are definately looking good for this time of year though, all of the fish were nice and fat. The meat on all of them was some of the best I have seen on any warm water fish. Wiper are my new favorite dinner choice. The four that we kept fileted out very nice and fed four people. It was quite the task dodging all the other boats trolling those cranks. It reminded me of a late summer boil or something.

arent the wipers supoosed to get to 10 pounds? we caught one that was only 8 or 9 inches long which is a good sign of young fish i think they plant them at 1 to2 inches. you would think that with the light pressure for the past 3 or 4 years we would get some monsters . i think a ten pounder would snap your pole. i love the way they hit a lure at about 40 milies an hour from the side. was out with skippy the lurker last summer and forgot to lock my pole holder my rod flew 20 feet out of the boat luckily the midddle pole snaged the line got it all back. ive been told wipers hang out in year class as they are put in. so if your on a school of big ones stay put. have only caught a couple of boils but they was sure fun. woodpile said they put 180'000 thousand in last year.

When the wipers were first planted, the DWR thought they would grow to at least 11 lbs. After a few years they found that Willard just wasn't deep enough to grew wiper much over 8 lbs. I've heard stories of people that claim they have caught 8 and 10 lbs wipers but the record remains at 6 lbs. 11 oz. and 26 inches. Here is a picture of a 30 inch wiper that weighted around 11 lbs. Wiperslayer and I were with Steve when he caught it last year. WH2

Your right it's not Willard, it was a guided fishing trip we were on last year in Nebraska. Here is a smaller one that I caught, 27 inches. I entered it in this months BFT Wall of Fame.

Wiperhunter2, I remember reading your posts when you got back from Nebraska last year, but I can't remember if you said that those fish fought as well as the wipers here or not? Jake

I usually troll for them here and there's nothing like a wiper hitting a trolled lure, at what seems like 40mph. For the few times a year when the wipers are boiling at Willard, I would say that they fight as good as the Nebraska wipers. Except for the fact that most of the wipers we caught there were bigger and because they were, they could pull more line from the reel. We were fishing with live bluegill, almost under the boat while we moved slowly over the structure, when the big wipers hit, they would make several runs of 30 or more yards. When the guide caught that 30 incher, it was a job to slow it down, it looked like it was not going to stop for a minute but he was finally able to turn it. All three of us had at least one on that was that big but couldn't keep them on the hook after one of those long runs. I sure wish we could use live bait here in Utah. Now you have me thinking about those big wipers again and wondering when I can plan another trip, boy was that a blast. WH2
