Good morning all, I would like to purchase a radio for my boat (so I can communicate with fellow BFTer's) and don't know much about them; therfore, I am soliciting your feedback before making a purchase. [ol] [li]What type would be better a hand held or mounted unit?[/li] [li]What features would you suggest?[/li] [li]How much can I expect to spend?[/li] [li]Do I need an antenna?[/li][/ol]
PS: I don't want to violate any rules with respect to promoting or advertising a vendor's product, so if you want to suggest a particular manufacturer please do so through a PM. Thank you.

I would have to say that most of the radio's that you will find will be either Uniden or shakespeare not that I have a preference but I have a shakespeare and it work's really well. A boat mounted unit would probably be best and YES you would need to mount a antenna due to the fact that unless you spend a higher amount of money the hand held unit's aren't quite as clear. There are some that are really nice however they are fairly expensive. The boat mounted unit is going to run you anywhere from 79.99-199.99 some include the antenna's while other's don't. A friend of mine broke his 8 foot antenna and it only cost us 30.00 to replace it so they can be found pretty cheap. Look at Boater's World on 2200 south State in SLC, or sportsmans I am sure would have something....Good luck in whatever you decide.

Here's a link to a Standard Horizon handheld for a huge sale price. My friends who yak the salt turned me onto this one. Salt yakkers abuse radios by dunking them in salt water and sand on a regular basis. The SH is the only one that holds up and also backs their product as well as Shimano. IMHO you won't find a better VHF for a better price. (May need to paste link into your browser)

*oops -I was assuming you wanted a VHF. You are probably just looking for a two way. Dang, where's my coffee.

[black]If you're looking for a VHF, I've got a Uniden console mount I'll sell you for $65. Used but works great. No antenna though. I want to get the Lowrance VHF to hook up with my Lowrance GPS so it can transmit GPS locations.[/black]

I think what you decide to buy has to do with where you fish the most. If you fish in a boat most the time then the mounted unit is the way to go. If you fish from shore, float tube or ice fish a lot then a good hand held might be the way to go. You could also buy a mounted unit and a hand held. The cheaper hand held models with a 7 mile range are going for 30.00 up to 100.00. I do know one thing for sure, the mounted units with the longer antennas have the best range but of course they aren't portable. Just me two cents worth. WH2

Thanks guys, I appreciate your feedback and recommendations. I fish primarily from a boat so I believe the mounted type suits me best. BLM, I'll send you a PM to discuss your radio you are selling, "over and out."
