Strawberry slushie anyone? Da Berry 4-22
#1
I got my chores and honey do's done early enough to have the afternoon free and headed up to Strawberry. The Berry this winter has been like a box of Crispy Creme donuts. I keep saying I am done but I always want one more (trip). I fished east of the marina today. Only 1 other person out there upon arrival and one family was heading out to fish as I was leaving. Conditions are deteriorating. There was a fair bit of slush at the edges which hardened some once you got about 15 ft. out. Once at this point, walking was pretty good, but the ice is rotting and soft. You would drop into a slush pocket occasionally. It will be OK this weekend, but from there it will be dicey. Ice was still about 20-24 inches thick. The fishing was good. I caught 15 and had 6-7 long line releases, mostly at the ice edges[unsure]. All were slot cutts. The fish were all over the water column, but fewer on the bottom than before, and more very near the surface. I was in 32 ft. of water. The shallow fish tended to hit harder and most of my hookups were 20 ft. and up. Jig type didn't seem to be critical. The action slowed way down after 5:15 and I left at 6PM. Strawberry might still be a good weekend bet if you don't want to battle the crowds at Willard, but I think after that it will get tough going until ice out.
Tight lines this weekend.

Thanks for the report. I'll bet it was rather toasty up there today. It's aweful tempting to try to get back up one more time, I just don't think I have the time. Oh well. Just have to wait until soft water I guess.
