Left for Powell on Wed. arrived at Bullfrog at 5:00pm. First time to Powell, checked out Bullfrog bay with sonar.. did'nt see alot of shad. Went south found some shad and strippers. Caught 5 Strippers in the 5 lb range all 23 or 24" long. Nice fish. Caught them on shad raps or tail dancers all in about half an hour before dark. Water temp was between 58 and 61 degrees. Had great weather..no wind and when we left sat. it was 83 degrees. Caught all the small mouth bass we could stand. Each evening we took a trip up the same bay and caught strippers. It was a great family trip. Stayed in the family units at Bullfrog and stopped at Goblin Valley on the way home.

Man I gotta get down there and catch some strippers now that I'm single.... [cool] Just teasin you man. Thats an awesome looking striper that you've got there. I've never caught one but I hear they put a pretty good bend in the rod. Are the smallies down there as stunted as everyone seems to think or do you get into any with size to them?? Sounds like you were lucky, from reading the other Powell reports to not run into big wind down there..... Are there any bugs or is it high desert where you don't have to worry about them too much??

I was down there the same time. We struggle with the stripers. We caught 4 total. We did catch a ton of smallies and one largemouth. We found a point up one of the canyons that was loaded with decent walleye. I was quite pleasantly suprised. We spent one evening and one morning there and caught the heck out of them. Would like to have caught more stripers though. The ones we did catch were nice healthy fish. Would like to go down there a little later in the season when the stripers start their boiling activities.
It will be interesting to see what they do down there regarding the boat launch. It was a pain to launch and walk. It would be a real nightmare if it was at all crowded. I guess we shall see. It was a very enjoyable trip for my buddy and me and our families.

WALLEYE! Were leaving Thursday to come down, just curious what was your ticket for the eyes? Smallies no problem, Walleye as of yet have no luck for me. Also were you trolling for the stripers, or were you jigging for them? Thanks for the report.

Congratulations Bob on a great first trip to Lake Powell. My first trip down there was a great experience also, then the second trip (a year later) was memorable for all of the wrong reasons.

RiverRatt77:
the biggest smallie we caught was 10" long. They are easy to catch so the kids enjoyed it. No bugs now to speak of but I'll bet come summer there will be!!!!
gofish:
We did not fish for walleye and did not catch any. I have caught walleye before but did not tarket them this time.
topehaw: I got your PM we trolled for stripper with rapalas at 2.8 to 3.3 mph.
Thanks to the great people on this web site and wayneswords.com we did pretty good and had an enjoyable trip.
