Highland Glen with the kid
#1
since I had my day on the water at athe floatilla Sat. I decided to take the boy out for his turn we went to Highland Glen park. That is his favorite place and mom wanted one of the big channels he always seems to catch there for dinner. No big channels this time but he couldn't keep the planter bows off of his line he brought in about 10 in two hours two of which followed us home. I'm actually suprised he managed to get that many ashore those things were biting lite just nibbling on it. But he managed to hook em. even when I could'nt.[cool]

I read the other day that the UDWR stocked 500 3.5" largemouth at Highland Glen Park. Of course, those are far too little to catch, but have you ever seen any larger largies in there?

I've been wanting to take the kids there.

Yes I have about this time of year in years past you would see tons of largie minows all around the edges of the pond. There was a pretty good brood stock of largies in there. Last year they stocked about 100 3 to 6 lb large mouth in there. I never hooked one of them not for lack of trying. But I think late in the year they all died due to O2 depletion. when no new water was being put into the pond. alot of big cats and all the planted rainbows. as well as alot of bluegill died towards then end of the year last year. I think they are going to try and bring it back this year.

The best part of taking the kids there is that they can go after the Bows while you try your luck for some LMB or channels. And for me it's close so if the kid don't last to long I haven't made a long trip.

500 largemouth is a significant commitment for the UDWR to make. I know that they had to purchase them from out of state.

Do you think that them ceasing to pump water in last year was due to the drought? Hopefully, it will not happen again.

It would be nice to have another decent largemouth destination in Utah County.

yes it was due to the drought the pond is fed by irragation water and when water got tight the hay fields and pastures won out over the pond.

Looks like we won't have to worry too much this year about the drought affecting this community fishing pond, but in the future it would be nice to believe that steps would be taken to protect the fish in Highland Glen if things got really dry again.
