[#505000]I took the Mrs's down to Lincoln Beach this morning to see if we could catch some fishies. We got there about 6:30am and threw out some sucker meat. Next to us was a group of four or five guys in their late teens/very early twenties. They were clearly trout fishermen as they were rigged for slime rockets. [/#505000]
[#505000][/#505000]
[#505000]I asked them how they were doing and they told me they had been there a few hours and hadn't even gotten a bite. Within the space of about 20 minutes we hand gotten 4 good bites but no hook-ups (First bite, my wife tries to set the hook with the bail open, and as for the others I am working with the Mrs's on not jerking the pole as hard as she can in a 5 foot arc for a hookset). I told group the best way to rig their tackle for the warm water species, then the Mrs's got a great hit. She set the hook and started reeling, the fight was on!! [
] As the fish got closer it looked as if it might be a decent sized channel cat, but as it got closer I could see it was "bait on the fin", aka carp. [/#505000]
[#505000][/#505000]
[#505000]The Mrs's was having a tough time fighting it so she swapped me her pole and took over net duty. I brought in the still living cut bait and we finally landed about a 10lb carp. Examining the carp I was amazed that some how my sweet wife had done the impossible and lasso'd (literally lasso'd) the sucker. I pulled in the remaining 30 feet of line by hand!! [
] Yup you got it, the hook was nowhere near the fish!!!! [/#505000]
[#505000][/#505000]
[#505000]I could tell the trout guys were really flustered so I took them a hunk of carp to use for bait (but I'm not telling how, [
] well ok maybe I will [
] ). Within about 10 mintues one of the guys landed a 21" walleye on fresh carp meat. He was excited and told me it was the first fish he had ever caught. That group promptly left with their one fish in hand.[/#505000]
[#505000][/#505000]
[#505000]I got a few more PRD's (Pick-up Run and Drops), then decided I wanted to play with a circle hook (They have been getting the better of me [pirate]). I threw out my pole with the circle hook, and about 15 minutes later that pole was darn, near pulled into the water. I let the fish pull for a second, starting reeling and....... nothing!! [
] #&!@*@&! Circle hooks (They still are getting the better of me)!!!!! I promptly switched back to a normal hook.[/#505000]
[#505000][/#505000]
[#505000]By this time the fishing had dropped off to almost nothing [crazy]. We had an hour left before the babysitter would call search and rescue to come find us so we decided to move over to the boat launch area to try something new. Talking with everyone along the way (and I do talk to EVERYONE it drives my wife nuts) I felt better that we weren't the only ones NOT catching fish and we seemed to be the only ones really getting any bites. [/#505000]
[#505000][/#505000]
[#505000]We tossed our poles in and soaked some bait. I decided I wanted to move one of my poles, and started to reel it in. SNAG $%!@# [mad]!!!! I slowly pulled my line to see if I could get the better of the snag, and it finally gave, however once it gave it started to fight?!?!?!?[crazy] What the!?!?! I reeled in a decent size mudcat. Where he came from I don't know but bless his slimy little heart he saved me from an official, and potentially embarassing, skunking. [sly] [/#505000]
[#505000][/#505000]
[#505000]The fishing was horribly slow for everyone I spoke to (including us), and I had to put split shot in my pockets to keep from being carried off by the bugs. We got a lot of PRD's but no serious contenders for the dinner table. It wasn't one of my best fishing trips. Utah Lake has kicked my butt a time or two and today was one of those. [/#505000]
[#505000][/#505000]
[#505000]On the plus side, it felt great to help that guy catch his first fish. I'm no expert and I'm sure I could learn tons and tons from most everyone on this board, but to pass on information I had then to have the guy tell me he caught his first fish and was glad he had bought his fishing license did make my day, whether I caught any fish or not. [
] I hope you guys fishing in the evening do better. We wrapped it up around 2pm.[/#505000]
[#505000][/#505000]
[#505000]There was no wind, the water was glass, and I was saying naughty words under my breath because I didn't bring my float tube with me. Maybe it was for the best. I may have saved a fellow fisherman from losing an eye with my wife's wild hooksets!!! [pirate] [/#505000]
[#505000][/#505000]
[#505000]Hey Ocean, when are you getting back from Florida so you can show me how to turn those darn Lincoln Beach PRD's into PRBD's (Pick-up, run, become Dinner)???? [
