I'm considering a fly-fishing trip to the Huntington (specifically the left fork) in early/mid July.
1) Any tips on fly selection for that river
2) anyone here interested in a mid-week (Mon-wed) trip, probably the second week? Camping in the canyon somewhere, probably at the Forks of the Huntington

Fly fishing Huntington ? Hmmm. I'll be in that area around mid-July doing some reseach up on Skyline Drive. Narrow it down a little more and maybe we could hook up there.
I know of numerous places to camp in that area - however, I'll probably camp up on Skyline because of my hounds. But, we could hook up on the water and cast a few feathers or fur at some tempting holes, and, who knows, maybe even find a fish or two to take them.
I guess I should have asked first(not that it matters to me), but, just for clarification, were you talking about the stillwater or the creek? (Also, as a side note: there are lots of other waters around there that I fish). I have a bucket'o'flies that work in the area and will gladly share them with you - on the water that is - it could easily depend on what bug is most active at that time - nevertheless, many of the "standards" will work.

The only advice I have is DO NOT FORGET THE BUG SPRAY! The last time I was up there in July (many years ago), the biting deer flies almost took my left arm off! They gang up on you by the thousands and show no mercy!!!

Wish it were a different time. I love that area but that week is bad. If you move it back a week, let me know.
I've done really well there in July, especially nymphing. Can get some great hopper action, particularly later in the month.

I generally avoid going anywhere on a holiday weekend. I'd bet if I rolled into that campground on the 4th there wouldn't be a campsite anywhere to be found. Sorry!
Thanks for the fly tips. I'm guessing the old standards on nymphs (wd40, scuds, rubber worms)? I'd certainly love to get into some hopper action. I got into a pattern a few years ago on the East fork of the Bear where the only thing any good was Hoppers, and them little buggers were tearing them up! Easily a 40 fish day (most were under 12")
