As I write this I’m sure this will enrage many of you as it has me. I will try to keep my emotions in check and my vocabulary as PG as possible.[mad][mad]

Last night as my neighbor got home he called me over to his car to show me a photo of a fish a guy at his work had caught at Jordanelle; a beautiful 23.5” smallmouth bass, and boy was she fat. Beautiful except it was dead on a stringer. The story he told me was that the guy had gone out last Wed. morning, caught the fish and high-tailed it out of there by 6:45. He knows it is an illegal fish and wanted to make his escape before he was caught. “That fish is illegal as hell,” he said. I told him I knew that and told him of what bassrods had taught me up at Deer Creek the week before about how smallies grow so slow until reaching a certain size and his friend had killed a spawner. At this time I lost my composure, told him what an A-hole his friend is and I think it’s pure bull $#!* that he did that. With his family standing there and my kids wondering why their pop had just gone insane he agreed with me and said it was just a guy from work and not a “buddy,” even though they do fish together sometimes. I asked what was his reason was for killing/keeping it. “Because he had never caught one that big before.” That’s a stupid reason!! Next time take a camera with you, you p^!(k. You obviously have one at home. Once again the expletives spewed from my mouth! I was told that he wants to try to turn it in for some sort of record and lie about the water where it was caught. More bad words from me. Bull $#!*, Bull $#!*, Bull $#!* .
I didn’t know what would help me to calm down, going for a walk or a couple of beers. A couple of beers later I went for a walk and thought what I could have done different. He was not in the photo but his young daughter was. No vehicle license plate visible or house numbers either. My neighbor certainly wouldn’t give me any other information on him at this point. I told him that I hope he has enough scruples to prevent such blatant poaching if he ever fishes with that guy again.

Man that is to hear. I have fished Jordanelle this year almost as much as any other body of water in search for landing a pig smally like that with no luck so far this year so it really upsets me to hear about the blatant poach.
Karma sucks and he has something coming to him.

Man that is harsh! I hope the dude gets caught. Take some pics, some measurements and then put her back! Perhaps we can let Tomegun and Predator take this guy out to the woodshed!

Never mind Tomegun and Predator, I would hunt him down and snitch him to the DWR and after DWR is done, I would have a real jawing match with him and tear him down psychologically. The mental state of his mind will never be the same as my thought process conveyed to him would be damaging on a permanent basis!
What an ignoramous idiot with a selfish penchant for destroying a beautiful fish, ought to be strung high and dry. If he wasn't too selfish he would take a photo and then take it to a taxdermist, for a replica of the real thing. What a moron who doesn't think ahead and plan ahead!

What makes this a poached fish? Slot limit.
Call the DWR if it really makes you mad. All they need is your neighbors name and they'll take care of it.

I think while the dwr would charge him, some judge would let him off with only a suspended license. A nieghbor of mine poached a trophy deer and only got a 800 dollar fine and loss of hunting and fishing privleges for 5 years. The guy still takes his boat out all the time and I think he is still going hunting. I mean after all he poached when he was a licensed hunter, why not when has no license.

Isn't it a crime to witness or have knowledge that a law has been violated without reporting that crime? Something like obstruction of justice or something like that? svpdgcar?
You should call the DWR and give them your neighbor's name and tell them he showed you the picture and let them investigate (if they decide to). That way, they can go to him and if he doesn't cooperate that for sure would be obstruction of justice. Bust that punk!

The guy that poached that bass, gets dumber by the minute. As does the guy that told you! If Your friend doesn't turn the poacher in, then he is just as guilty as the poacher. You sure don't poach a critter or a fish and then tell about it Duh! Duh This guy deserves to be caught, taken out behind the wood shed, Gut shot and left for the Crows! Its too bad this kind of thing takes place, but I'm sure this isn't the first time, and wont be the last time someone poaches a big bass from Jordanelle. That was just one that we heard about, just think of all of the ones you don't hear about! If ther is a temptation like that, then there will always be someone that wont be able to resist!

Ive thought about that alot. I guess I'm not willing to create bad blood between me and the family I share a fence with. Our kids play together and the whole bit. I know many may disagree with me on that too. It is second hand knowledge, he could be lying about it (I dont think so though) and if push came to shove may be hard to prove. As was stated by Bigfishrule, he'd probably get just a slap on the wrist. Trust me, if I saw it first hand I'd be making the call.
I clearly stated my distain for keeping that fish and told him to relay the message of how wrong it is to do so.

Yeah I suppose you wouldn't want to make an enemy out of your next door neighbor over this. Now, if it was HIM that had poached that fish, I might just consider making him an enemy!! [cool]

Very tough situation Bro.....
I had an experiance like that once. I turned him in. The guy went out 1 weekend to schofield and brought home 37 Bow's..... That ticked me off..... He went out the next weekend and brought home 43 more.
I went straight to a freind of mine who works with the DWR and he was busted the very next day.
They took his everythig.. license, boat, and almost got his truck, but it was his only means of transport.
Also, I was living at my Grandparents so I could move, that's the little differance from my situation and yours.

Actually, it may surprise some of you, but I am going to have to take the other road on this one.
In no way will I support such action.
Breaking the law and harvesting an illegal fish is in now way acceptable.
The dude should have his day in court in front of a judge.
But, I can tell you this. It wont mean much. A $40.00 fine and a black mrk on his record that only lasts two years as long as he has no more instances in that two years. Then it gets erased.
The system doesnt work against these intentional law breakers, and occasionally catches guys trying to do a decent thing in a bad spot.(but thats a different story)
To get to the meat of this issue.
Heres what happens.
The guy goes fishing, doesnt have a camera, or doesnt have anyone with him to take a picture for him.
He gets a real nice fish, and has "sticker shock" Its the biggest fish he has caught.
He wants bragging rights and knows its a hard sell without a photo.
Its not right, and its kind of childish, but at the same time we have all FELT the feeling.
Its what a guy does at that point that makes him who he is.
If you choose to kill that fish, you have to question your motives.
If its an illegal fish (like in this case) and you choose to break the law, you choose to give up your rights if you get caught.
This dude made his choice. He should answer for it.
He should answer for it to a judge. The sentance wont be fair, and next weekend the dude will be back out fishing, but thats the system.
But, heres the probelm. So this guy kept an illegal fish. Would anyone care if the regs were different? What if it was a legal fish?
No one, NO ONE gave pineview fisher any crap at all for killing a 21.5 inch largemouth during the spawn.
5.5 lbs isnt enough to be considered trophy class, the dude could have kept a tons of 12 inchers he caught that day to eat, there was NO reason to keep that fish other than the dude fell victim to sticker shock.
Now casue its legal we all have to sit back and eat it.
Legal or ethical. Its a debate I have a hard time with. I dont care if jordanelle regs get changed and you can keep 100 fish of any size you want. Anglers should be controlled enough to do the right thing for the fishery not thier pride. There is NO reason to kill a trophy fish out of jordanelle.
The dude should go to court for breaking the law, but in my mind the bigger issue is what do we do about these guys who harvest the fish they shouldnt when it is legal?
We have to find a way to educate guys about the issue.
Replicas are the way to go these days. You dont get half the quality out of a skin mount with the new technology of the replicas.
How do you get a guy to overcome sticker shock?
Even if you change the law to protect all big fish, there is still going to be the guy whos eyeballs pop out of his sockets when that toad shows up and is tempted to break the law.
I dont know what to say about it other than that I dont agree with it, but I understand the temptation.
And for me, I know one thing, who ever this guy is, he and I wont be having any conversations about fishing. Thats where I draw my personal line. He wont ever be in my circle of fishing partners.

[black]Let's Lynch the thieving basstard!!!!
Last year, Predator and myownself saw some ratface bastard steal an illegal smallie at Jordanelle. Predator wanted to turn him in. I said it wasn't worth turning a guy in for a 17" fish. Predator said, "why?". I replied, "it ain't worth getting shot at or boat vandalized for any fish".
We live in a time where people think they are justified for doing the wrong thing any time. Sometimes we confront those who perperate bad doings, but at what price? So, I say let the bastard have his fish. I hope he rots in hell.

Yes my son, BUT like I said, legal or not, theres an educational issue here.
Do you know how rare big largemouth are in this state? Big smallmouth too?
Some day I will be educating someone and I will end up shot. I just hope they vandalize your boat not mine.

Call the DWR and give them your neighbors' name and address. The fellow made the choice to poach, he should be willing to pay the price. It will hopefully educate him, though.
I can just about guarantee that the DWR already knows about this incident. I heard about this website from someone who works there, and I'm sure many there follow this forum.

I was biting my all week from the 21.5" greenie from the View , but yes it was legal and that sucks big time . Not everyone see fishing the same way so you will always get the guys that don't even read the regs or the ones that just don't care . I've seen families that take there kids out and have no clue on the rules are and I try to explain it to them . But some you can tell , they don't care about rules . I been known to get in their face with a few choice words . It always makes me feel better .
