Carp Fest
#1
I went out yesterday with my old compound bow and five old aluminum arrows. After shooting over 40 carp and losing all but one arrow I broke the nock off the last arrow and had to call it quits. I found a flooded field on the south end of Utah Lake where there were 1000's of carp swimming around. If anyone wants to go with me let me know. I may be going again today or tomorrow. I need to get some more arrows first but I can't wait to get back out. What a blast!!!!

Do you think an 80 # hand crossbow would work ? I have some darts for it but, they are not specifically for fishing - I could modify them a little and invent some kind of line holder and put on 25 # mono. It sounds like a good way to get some catfood. I was there yesterday(by Lincoln beach) and the bugs were out in force, but I didn't look for acres of bait in the shallows - we were looking for catfish. If you decide to go, let me know - if nothing else, I could possibly provide some comic relief to the effort of cleaning up the lake.

I will be going out probably tomorrow, Wednesday, after work if I can. I will hopefully be leaving Springville by 4:15. If anyone wants to come and tag along we can meet at the Springville exit and join up or follow behind. TD, I wish I could go in the morning but work beckons.

Fishhound, I would check the regulation before you use your cross bow. If I'm not mistaken it is illegal to use a crossbow for hunting or shooting carp. This place I went there were so many fish if somebody wants to bring a pitchfork I can guarantee them a handful of fish. I will probably be bringing mine for after I get done with my bow and arrow.

Sounds like a waste of perfectly good game fish for no good reason.

[#505000]Game fish?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? We're both talking carp right?????? Well although I don't normally condone senseless killing, and I have a major soft spot for critters (excluding carp), I figure with 90% of the Utah Lake biomass being carp, and the poor June Sucker suffering because of this it's my duty to exact some carp punishment!!! [/#505000]
[#505000][/#505000]
[#505000]Besides how is it a waste? Fly larvae and bacteria need to eat too. Carp make awesome bait, and whoever owns the field is getting free feritlizer!! Waste is all in the eye of the beholder!![/#505000]

Curtis L,

Carp is definitely not game fish at all. DWR has been wanting to get rid of carp from Utah lake because they are destroying the habitant of many true game fish that live there. Carp is the main culprit that is responsible for the demise of June Sucker's habitant. There are 7.5 million carp in the lake, and we have the fish company come out to harvest the carp for dog food and fish food every day, and yet, there are still millions of carp everyday. They make up 90% of total population of Utah Lake.

Game fish of Utah Lake are:

LMB
SMB
Walleyes
White Bass
Catfish (Channel and Muds)
Northern Pike
Bluegill
Crappies
Perch
and a few hardy trout near the mouth of the river

All that is listed in the DWR and at Utah lake's sign billboard. You will never see carp listed on the board because it is much hated but they are in there, but it is in no way a game fish.

Come on out and join the carp fest.

Thank you. I am glad I asked. That's why I posed the question if it would be OK or not. My last proclamation bit the dust last week when I put my soaking wet tube on top of it and it turned into mush. I was hoping someone would be aware of the details - I remembered bows were OK but, didn't know that crossbows were not(I don't bow or spear fish as a general rule but would like to try sometime).
