Chuck,

I've got two poles that have had spider wire on them for four years and have had no problem with the guides. I did however go with a Mitchell Spidercast reel. This was recommened to me by a guy that works at sportsmens. Not sure if this was needed but the reels have been good reels.

Plastic, Nylon and other soft materials are a braided lines worst enemy. I use several types of braided line but only on Fuji guides. As a safeguard, I do not put mono back onto that same rod.

Even certain types of ceramic guides have been know to be "Grooved" by braided lines as well as super lines. This usually occurs withing the top 2 or 3 guides depending on the length of the rod.

Once the guide is grooved, it will be like a set of teeth for mono lines that will follow later on.

Solid metal guides are a little more impervious to this destructive behavior of the super lines.

Good luck and I hope this helps you.[cool]

There are some great benefits to the braided line. I used 50# spider wire for the last two weeks up in Alaska. It casts real smooth, small diameter, and strong as hell. But it is a nightmare for tangles! And it will cut you pretty easy as well. It also gets messed on your real when you pull on the line much. Would I use it again? I think so....but beware.

I've been using super lines for about 8 years now. I love them. With that said, there are some things that are different and need to be considered. I don't get to fish as often as I did (3-5 days a wk). By tha I mean all day sun up to after dark. But when I was I ate the guides right off my ugly stick. Did I change line ..... NO I bought better guides. Ceramics do really well for normal fishing type persons, but will grove in time. The Fuji guides (for me) have held up and have not had any problems. Started using spiderwire with my old mitchell 300. I found it better to underspool your reel rather than over spool it. I now use a quantum pti with fireline on one spool and spiderwire on the other. I prefer the spiderwire. Learn a few new knots as they tie diffeent than mono. Also if you are like me you will be using a mono leader. I will probably be changing from my bright yellow to a more subdued color. But I say if you are going after big fish in heavy cover super lines get my vote.

Thanks you guys, I will be using a baitcaster reel for this and I have 1 rod with the fugi guides already, so I guess I'm about ready to go spend my fathers day gift certificate from sportsman and get some spiderwire. later chuck

[black]Just remember that Spiderwire or Fireline does NOT streach. A newbee using supper braded lines generaly loose lures, leaders, and fish because they are used to setting the hook hard and big. So, go a little easier on the hook sets than you normaly would with mono.[/black]

Fireline, spiderwire, etc. are not true braded lines just not mono. for troling I would get metered braded line, for casting those multy filiment lines are strong but low abrasion resistance so thay dont work well on a downrigger.

I've been using braided line for a few years now for trolling and I've never had any problems. I've also used it for downrigging but I don't use downriggers very often, what problems have you had with them or what do you mean with your statement, "low abrasion resistance so they don't work well on a downrigger". Welcome to the site good to have you on the board. WH2

I use my spiderwire setup on my downrigger quite often and have seen no problems. Not sure what you mean by "low abrasion resistance so they dont work well".

Downriggers are a whole nother subject I'm no authority, for me thay either pre releace, don't rellease or get tangled around the cable, with fireline by the time I yanked hard enuf to tell the line was often parted company from my lure, this never happened with mono, also I thought abration resistance was why you have to use special knots w fireline,
.is fireline the same thing as spiderwire? All I was trying to say was for troling thay make braded nylon line with colors to tell you how far out you are.
