Hello Everyone,
Question for the forum. Has anyone been to the gorge recently? Any advice on how/where to catch some macs. I'm not really looking to catch the state record or anything, I would like to get into a number of them, and keep some of the smaller ones. I am going to be staying at the Cedar Springs camp ground, and will be renting a boat from there. Any advice on baits, jigs, trolling gear, anything would be greatly appreciated.

i was there last week and caught a ton of smaller ones on anything tipped with a worm. if you can get it down to 70 or 80 feet you'll catch plenty. they're good eating too. i didnt fish over by cedar, more around lucerne. good luck to ya. bkidder

Go back and look at some of the older post on this board,and the wyo board.There are lots of info talking about the gorge,not as much as around cedar springs,but you will get the jest of whats been working,,,,,,,,good luck.

I have heard that Jarvie Canyon is a good place for Macks. It is just a short distance up the canyon from Ceder Springs.

The one problem that I know that I am going to run into is the fact that I will NOT have a fish finder available. Can you guys give me some advice on possible structure I can look for that commonly will hold macs?

Without knowing your depth it will be tough!!! MAc's typically will be in the 80-100' depth this time of year. This is were the thermocline is to their liking. If you don't have a depth/finder, then look for other boats that may be vertical jigging or trolling with riggers around a certain location. You will have to watch others to give you an idea where the Mac's are. If Jigging, just a few feet one way or the other can make a HUGE difference when jigging over rock piles / mounds. Most of my luck landing Big macs has been in the Lucerne area, and near the Pipeline. Good Luck

If you are at Cedar springs, you can catch Macks off of a lot of the Points in the Canyon. If you don't have a sonar unit, then just mark your line with a marker at eighty and a hundred feet, that way you know your in the ball park, and then its location, and technique.

[red][size 3]I've felt your pain. We spent one trip at the Gorge where our transducer was on the fritz. We said "what the heck" and went for it. We ran the riggers at 80' and donated one lure and one rigger ball to the depths but still picked up several Macs. In one way it was almost more enjoyable not messing with the graph and just enjoying the scenery and suspense. [/size][/red]

vantage. There is, however, an island between the Cedar Springs marina and the dam that has a long underwater point that runs from its tip 200 yards our so out into the lake. It drops off steeply on bothg sides but may be holding some fish along the dropoffs and off the point at the end. This is the first island you come to as you head from Cedar springs toward the dam. It is very narrow. The island runs close to north-south in direction and the underwater point runs off to the north-north east.
