Fresno, CA
#1
My work is sending me to be based in Fresno, Ca for the next few month and Im likely to have alot of spare time on my hands (the first month Ill be on reserve status - waiting for someone to call in sick or something) and as long as Im 1 1/2 hrs or less from the airport I can do whatever I want.
So, Im "fishing" for advice on good places to wet a hook while Im there.
Any suggestions???????????

If you don't mind a bit of a drive I would look into hooking up with tubn2 or japanron from the california board and go out on the channel islands. Or just shoot them a pm. They are both a lot of fun to fish with and know a lot of good spots all over california,

[cool][#0000ff]I have lived all over California and have worked and fished a lot from Bakersfield to Fresno. Fresno is like most other California towns along the "valley"...not much going on in town, but close to a lot of other fishing opportunities.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]It is just a short shot up into the Sierra Foothills, where you will find everything from good fly fishing (Kings River) for trout to reservoir fishing for trout, smallmouth, largemouth, spotted bass, crappies, cats, and all the other fresh water species you can imagine.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Some of the lakes to look up on the Internet and to get maps for when you hit Fresno are Pine Flat, Millerton, and Success (down by Porterville). All good lakes for both trout and warm water. [/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]During the summer, you can drive up to the trailheads for the Sierras and hike back in for golden trout, rainbows, browns and brookies. You can drive south to Bakersfield and fish up the Kern River and on Lake Isabella. Going North, you have several major rivers and their reservoirs near Modesto and up into Sacramento.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]An hour or so west of Fresno, you have the Central California canal system, near Los Banos, that has cats and stripers. Farther west you have the whole San Francisco Bay system. Lots of good fishing inside the bay and charter boats that will take you outside for a wide variety of species.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Fishing is not as good in the winter months, for some species, but is great for others. If you like crappies and trout, they are some of the best targets when it is cooler. Only problem is that this is also the time when the big sustained Pacific storms roll in and soak everything. They can put rivers and lakes "out of shape" for long periods.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]There are lots of good tackle and bait shops in the area. They are usually a good source of info on what is happening where.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]The really good news is that there IS a lot of good action within reasonable driving distance.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Good luck and have fun. Send reports and pics.[/#0000ff]
