trout question
#1
I recently was up at Causey ,and one of the fish I caught looked strange. Its gill plates didnt cover its gills completely. I know Causey is known as a whirling disease water just wondering if this is one of the things caused by whirling disease. other than that the fish seemed fat and fine.
thanks for your help.

Welcome to the boards!

You know I don't think that shorter gill plates would be due to whirling disease, but I have caught fish out of Causey with the same problem.

I fish at Stawberry alot and have caught multiple fish that have gill plates to do not cover the gills. I have often wondered about what causes this as well. If I see a fish and game cop I think I will ask them about that. It almost seems as though there is some thing deformed about the fish. Let us know if you find out something.

Raiders rule! Even if they aren't winning. Where would all the misfits go if it weren't for the Raiders?

Glad you are not a fair weather fan.

Oh ,,,, catching troutskies is fun too.

Thanks everyone for welcoming me. and I appreciate the quick responses. it was just something I had never seen before on a fish.I always thought that trout especially were very sensitive about the gill area and it was weird to see this.
oh and Cat Man we'll see whose crying a river to fish in come the 13th of november.when the Raiders put a hurtin on the denver donkeys...[Tongue]

Every time that I have noticed a fish with short gill plates, I looked at the rest of the fish that I have caught and notice that some have chewed up fins.

So I assumed that the short gill plates was some damage the fish sustained at the hatchery before being planted.
