Scofield... It's in the air
#1
What do you think guys? Will we be reading posts about Scofield ice this year by turkey day?

Anyone been up there or know the water temp? I know it's been cold up there lately and it's flat killing me to go ice fishing! [pirate]

I predict ice by Monday the 14th. Maybe not at Scofield but a few other lakes I know. Report to follow on the night of the 15th. I'm off work starting the 15th and plan to spend my share of gas in search of the hard stuff. It kills me to sit and wait for these lake to freeze.

I imagine lakes like Huntington will surely be frozen by then... Any predictions on Berry ice this year? I say Monday December 5th!

[cool]I agree with you on Strawberry (at least in a few bays, anyway), but SSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Don't give away our secret, "k?" Most of the Utah casual ice fishermen think that the berry doesn't have safe ice until AT LEAST New Years (if not later) and I'd prefer to keep it that way![Wink]

Strawberry will not have safe ice until after the first of the year. Soldier Creek and Mud Creek may frezze by the 5th but it will be iffy at best. Chicken creek will be safe by the 20th but don't venture out beyond the point or you will be in trouble. Just my predictions based on water temps at this point and the ten day forecast. If we get an arctic clipper by Thankgiving all bets are off. If not you'll find me in Renegade on New Years Day. Second point on your right, 26 ft of water, look for the guy dressed in all yellow. Depending on the ice, maybe an airboat there, maybe a few sleds. I'm a tricky IFG.

PS. Did I mention I have an airboat?

[cool]Yes, I do think that our big Indian Summer is now officially over, and from here on out it's going to be below freezing at night at Scofield. I think we'll be ice fishing at Scofield on Turkey Day weekend, but with the prices of gas right now, I'm going to make sure it has safe ice first before I drive 2.5 hours to get there. I'm going to call Big Pine Sports in Fairview in a week or so. They seem to keep pretty good tabs on that lake as well as Hunington (which generally freezes up a week or two before Scofield. Usually fuzzyfisher lets us know when it's frozen (as he lives in that area) but I think he is in MN (I think) on business, so he probably won't know this year. Let's hope I'm wrong, and he still provides us with an update.

In the meantime, you can track the temps at Scofield (and any other lake) at this website: [url "http://www.met.utah.edu/cgi-bin/droman/raws_ca_monitor.cgi?state=UT&rawsflag=290"]http://www.met.utah.edu/cgi-bin/droman/raws_ca_monitor.cgi?state=UT&rawsflag=290[/url] Just go over to the links on the left side of the page and scroll down to the body of water/area that you want. For example, Strawberry I think you have to click on Daniels Summit. Thanks to Hellsangler69 for showing me this link in the past.

I have ice fished Strawberry before the end of the year for the last 10 years. Usually by the 2nd week of December.

You are right that the main lake will not be completely frozen until after though.

Berry Temp on friday was 49.1 degrees on friday. Last year it was already in the low 40's. I almost always fish the berry though the week before christmas. As far as scofield goes my family goes there, most years the friday after thanksgiving every year.

Bigcat and outfortrout. Oops come to think of it we did'nt make it down last year untill a week later.

Scofield has been ice fishable 5 of the last 6 turkey days with last year being the one year it wasn't quite safe yet. However I think it was ready by the monday or tuesday after turkey day. I fished Huntington instead on turkey day and scofield the first saturday in December. Both with good fishing. 3 weeks and counting!

[cool]Hey John, did you ICE fish Scofield LAST Turkey Day (2004) Friday too? If so, you are the only person I know of that did. I had heard that there wasn't ice on it last T Day which broke the streak of consecutive Thanksgivings with safe ice. I was outta town anyway, so it didn't effect me, but I'm just curious if you REALLY did ICE fish it last year at that time. I didn't get out there till a week or two after because of the unsafe ice. It had a good 5 or 6 inches by that time though and I'll go out on 4 inches (my minimum).

I'm going to be in town this Turkey Day and would love to fish it the day after. That's what my plans are right now anyway.[crazy]
