Fly Fishing In Idaho
#1
[Wink] I was born & raised in Glenns Ferry and now reside in Utah. I visit Idaho Falls and Pocatello, Chubbuck area quit frequently and was wonder where one might do some productive fly fishing. I was in Idaho Falls for Thanksgiving and did real well at one of the diversion dams. It was about 5 miles west of Idaho Falls.
I realize I got to focus on rivers right noe but some of those get ice capped also. Any ideas?

No offense Flygoddess but it sounds like you need to get out and try ice fishing. Its a blast and it gives you a chance to catch some fish even when the rivers are frozen. If you don't want to go out with one of the guys or by yourself, I'm sure a few of the gals on the site would love to show you how its done. It not, then I hope you are able to find a place to fly fish, good luck. WH2

There a few places to flyfish near Pocatello, Springfield and Black Canyon down by Grace. I went to Springfield a couple of weeks ago and caught 6 in a few hours. They all ranged from 16-19 inches long. Dress warm because it was cold.

I have fished Springfield before and love it. I like the fact that they plant it with Magnum 18" planters cause of the bird refuge. Caught a 28" out of there. I usually float tube it and I know that it is warmer water cause my brother-inlaw caught a small mouth and I know that the weeds are probably down, but is there ice? Do you fish from shore or tube it?

During the winter I usually fish from the shore. I get too cold using my float tube in the winter. It doesn't ice over and I fish down by the field with the cows and by the covert on the other side of the highway. The water has been pretty murky lately. When I fish from the shore I do just as good as the the float tubers but you get bored being only able to fish a few spots. I am hoping to get a pontoon eventually and then I will row vs. wade I have never heard of a smally coming out of there. Bass on a flyrod are a blast. You can also flyfish down by Eagle Rock on the Snake. You will know if your fishing the right hole because you will loose alot of flies on a snag. I have seen some big fish come out of there. Just be careful wading if crossing to the other side.

I could make all sorts of excusses about ice fishing, such as I have a problem walking on water with a hard on, or it is so hard to hit the hole every time with a fly[Wink]
But, the truth be know, it is my husband a purist fly fisherman. I even have an ice fishing rod. We stay busy fishing rivers during the winter but, then we live in Utah.
I might take you up on that offer and thank you. He is kinda woosie when it comes to real cold and ice fishing. I would just have to get me a good pair of Sorell boots and I got the clothing. If I can stand in a river for hours I think I could stand ice fishing.

I wouldn't have believed the small mouth either except, I caught a couple of chub there a couple of years ago while fishing with him and he we again earlier this year and sent me a picture of what he thought was a chub and it was deffinitly a smallie. It is the only one I have heard about or seen.
I have a Cardiac Canyon 11 1/2' kick boat with motor and fish finder I have used there, but I just got this new 4' pontoon made by Venture Outdoors called "The Echo". It is so cool, it has the hard plastic seat like the big ones but the back of the seat is strapps so you can tilt it back for comfort. It has a small metal frame which we made a shelf for to store stuff. The best part is that it has self sealing bladders. Check out our photo gallery at www.pbase.com/albot (it is at the bottom of the page) They are only $300. but they will last forever and they are made in Brigham city, UT. CLOSE.
Thanks for the info, I plan on coming up 2006 as soon as I come up with $168. for 2 licenses OOch! I will be up in Idaho Falls for the fly tying convention tying some of my size 30 - 32's.

Hi Folks,

Thought I would jump in on this conversation. Winter fly fishing can be some sweet times if you are prepared for the weather. The crowds are down and the fish still feed now and then. A little homework will help you on your water and what time of day etc.

Springfield Reservoir is a small lake and has some very healthy fish. I worry about overcrowding once in awhile, but, it seems to be holding up for now. I have never heard of Smallmouth either coming out of Springfield. You never know, though. My god what a treat to have Mr. Shoulders (Smalllmouth) on the end of your fly line!

Other waters, North Fork Snake River, for instance can still be crowded at time during the winter. Us fly fishers just have to keep our skills sharp!

Welcome to BFT Idaho flygoddess.
supperslammer already told you some of the most popular winter fly fishing places close to Pocatello. I have never seen a smallmouth come out of Springfield but I only fish it 2 or 3 times a year. I have friend that caught a smallmouth out of Springfield around 13" about 4 years ago. The South Fork and North fork are both popular around Idaho Falls. The main snake or any other river that is open will also offer fly fishing opportunities. 2006/2007 fishing regs should be online this next week. When I see them I'll post a link.
Here's a link that you may find useful.

Many of the gages have been ice affected since the cold snap we had a couple weeks ago. If the gage is ice affected it will give you a clue that it probably isn't a good idea to try fly fishing that part of the river.

Thanks so much for the wlcome. I have already looked up the regs for Idaho, that is how I found out the price of an out of state year went up. What's bad about that is I grew up up there. Oh well, there is more work for me here and we do have some great rivers (Provo, Green and the Weber) along with lakes like Jordonell, Strawberry, Lake Powell, even Willard Bay for wipers.
I was spoiled at Henry's Lake this last August-September however, I caught 15 chub in one area that were 14"-16". Bumbed me out. People have got to start putting some of the big ones back. I did catch several piggs. A bunch 24" to 26" one 28" and one 30+ ".
Measured the length, width, weight and several pictures and let them go.
I am a firm believer in catch release, but I do keep one a year to eat. (I kept a 24")

Hi Flygoddess

Who makes the cardiac kickboat?

The Cardiac Canyon is made by Dave Scadden who now sells out of North Fork. They don't make the Cardiac Canyon like mine anymore which is too bad cause it is so easy to work with with the frame being flat all the way across (easy to put a standing platform on) Check out the North Fork Pontoons site, he does have some great ideas.

I asked Dave when he was going to come out with accessories for the Cardiac, and he told me to sell it and get one of the new ones, which ticked me off. I love the top mount square aluminum frame (Made it easy to put a standing platform on it with the cloth seat, I had a 4' X 5' platform) which his new ones don't have that frame anymore. I love the boat and I will come up with my own ideas, but, really Dave, how do you sell a 4 year old boat (with nothing wrong with it) that you paid $1,200. for and then spend $1400 for the new one. Not gonna happen, but it just seems to me when you come up with an expensive design like that, you come up with added extras (make more money instead of turning people off).
