I've heard that 90% of the fish are caught by 10% of the fishermen & I always figured I was well entrenched in that 10%. Well, the fish at Pelican busted that bubble today.
We left town about 5 AM, hit snow about halfway up Parleys & didn't get out of it until about the Currant Creek turnoff. By the time we hit Pelican the sky was pretty much clear. The ice looked good so off we went. I forgot my ice cleats - or lost 'em. Result was I introduced my butt to the Pelican ice - twice. The second one was pretty spectacular. I think had bassrods wondering if he oughta call 911. I lit on the end of my auger & flipped it into the air & it lit on top of me. No harm no foul, only a bruised ego.
Marked a lot of fish on sonar but they had lockjaw big time. Bassrods tried to show me how to do it but I didn't get the point.
He got one small 'gill & one pretty nice largemouth, I got one bite & that was it for me.
The day wasn't a loss though, I made a new friend, the weather was gorgeous, no wind & shirtsleeve temps most of the day. We saw a couple HUGE flocks of ducks & one flight of about 200 geese.
Ice is 3 - 4" thick & solid for the most part but for some leads that had opened to 6 - 8" wide in a couple places.
Last thing, If you want a solution to any of the worlds problems, just ask one of us. I think we might have worked out the answer today - if we can remember it.
All in all a great day don"t ya think?
