]Had a great day on porucpine on Sat. The ice is getting a little thicker, near the dam most of it is around 5 to 6 inches, though there is one area on the south side that was only about 3 inches when I drilled a test hole. Use caution and test the ice as you move around.
Didn't have much luck until noon, then we finally found a school that stuck around a long time. The average size was about 13" with that largest being 17 1/2. We were fishing in 70 feet of water and the schools came through at all elevations from the bottom to the top, however most were caught from around 30 feet.
Small Ice flys in pink or orange, tipped with wax worms, below castmaster or swedish pimple attractors were doing the best.
The kokes generally won't hook themselves you have to really watch, they would only hit once and then you had to jig lightly to get them to hit again. you had to strike while the rod still going down from a bite. We would have 10 or 15 minutes of nothing and then the school would come back and everyone had their arms in the air from striking. sometimes we had 4 or 5 fish on at once.
Last week the fishing was just the opposite. 25 people on the ice, and maybe 25 fish caught.
