i have a downrigger that has the positive ion control. thats what the black box is designed to do. i thought that it would make a difference, but i havent noticed much of one. my brother still uses his old manual rigger and catches just as many fish most of the time.(sometimes more, sometimes less) id also be curious to hear if anyone on here has noticed a big difference. as for me, not really.

Kentofnsl can give you some info on how to check your boat to see if you need one. I think you put a test meter lead on the down rigger cable and the other goes on the negative side of your battery, if you get a positive reading then you might need one. If Kent does not respond to this post send him a PM, I'm sure he will be glad to help. WH2

I wrote a rather lenghty post on this very subject years ago based on my experience working charter boats on the Lake Erie, but, I can't find it. Bottom line is there is no data that suggests a black box increases fish catch ratios. If your worried about it or simply want to eliminte the supposed problem, here is what you can do.

On a fiberglass boat, connect a piece of ground wire to the annode on you motor, problem solved.

On an aluminum boat do the same, but put a piece on insulating material between your down riggers and hull, don't forget the bolts too.
