Well, around Aug this year when it stops snowing , raining etc,
Im gonna get after it again with my new lil corkies. Do most of you who use this rig simply let the Corky slide on your leader towards the hook ?
Last year I used a slide sinker and a swivel about 18 inches from hook. I let the Corky slide on the leader towards the hook. I was curious if this is consistent with others approach.
Eyes and Channels loved it !!!! [ ]

You just described my setup. That's exactly how I use Corkies, and they've been pretty successful for me in the past.

[cool][#0000ff]That pretty much describes the basic rig. However, there are a lot of variations. First there is the length of leader. Sometimes a shorter leader works better, depending on water clarity, how close to the bottom the fish are holding, etc. Other times a longer leader works better for fish cruising well above the bottom. In most cases it is better to be slightly above the fish.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Another big variable is color. Again, depending on water temps and clarity, the fish may want something all chartreuse, chartreuse with red dots, half chartreuse and half red or anything with white in it. Basic black sometimes works, as do the glow models. There are days when the fish definitely seem to prefer one color over another.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]The third big optional factor is the size of the corky. If you are soaking larger baits, then you need more buoyancy...bigger corkies. Small minnows will still float with the smallest model corky. If the fish are touchy, you will usually do better with the smallest corky you can get by with. On other days, larger ones help attract them and wake them up.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]If you are fishing crawlers with corkies, you can give the corky a bit of help by injecting a little air in the crawler with a needle. This works with minnows too, and some minnows already float if their air bladder is full.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Ya really think the snow will let up by August? I was kinda hopin' for earlier.[/#0000ff]

Yes, when I use a corky setup, that is the one I usually employ. At least, that would be the regular starting point for me, but, as TD mentioned, there are a number of variations possible for that simple setup. Normally, I start with the bait as is, then I go to the "blow up with air" technique to lift the bait off the bottom a little more and/or orient it in the water column a little differently.
Depending on the water clarity, fish's dispostion, current and depth of water and fish, different configurations can provide significant degrees of success. Leader length, hook and bait size also effect which corky size I use, and whether I employ a slide or a fixed corky setup.
My rule of thumb is this: If I've had not action, I change my bait and/or presentation about every 15 minutes. When using two rods, as I usually do, I alternate the timing between the two rods, so I'm always checking on one and and it keeps me pretty busy.
Disclaimer - As anyone who has fished with me can testify to, sometimes I like to veg-out and just watch the scenery and I don't follow my own rule of thumb.

OK guys I guess I'm a little behind in the times but what is a Corky Rig? do any of you have a picture? I just fish a small jig, 2lb test on an ultra light. It works but not all the time. I could use some pointers if you have any.

[cool] [#0000ff]You can use your SEARCH feature to find quite a few recent threads on corkies. You do not use 2# line with these because you may hook up to large walleyes or catfish. Here is a pic of the corkies (from Cabelas).[/#0000ff]

Here's one kind of corky rig. I am having difficulty finding the one variety that everyone on this thread is referring to, but this one is quite similar and I have used it(with a small variation) on many occasions.

[ ] We use the corkie rig when we go steelhead fishing up on the salmon r, i never thought of using it for anything but drift fishing, might have to try it for some cat and wally fishing some eve out at willard. We usually let it just slide on the leader behind a big maribou leach streamer, but for the steelies we are using 12 to 15 lb test, about 2 ft leader and a three way swivel with a piece of surgical tubing to put weights into.

well done on the rigs. These are very effective for walleye and cats. Also the beads that I mentioned in this post work well. They dont float but the Glow in the dark ones make a big diff at Utah Lake.

Lil'Corky's are great, use them all the time for cats and walleyes. Before we had them in Minnesota, we would take a piece of foam,(like used for packing in boxes) put a hole thru it with a hot needle and use it with leeches or minnows, deadly for eyes. It's nice to have the modern version with all the assorted colors. WE NEED SOME WARM WEATHER!!!!!!

[cool][#0000ff]Floating jig heads work good too, and it is easy to make your own. I posted something about this awhile back, but here are some pics of how to make your own floating "bait servers".[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]These floating jig heads can also be good for slow bottom bouncing behind a float tube (or a slowly drifting boat). Rig with a whole small minnow, a piece of minnow or crawler and just kick along until you get a customer. The difference is that with a floating jig head it is usually best to set the hook on the strike, rather than letting the fish run with the bait.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]As you might suspect, you can fish the corky rig the same way, but most guys use them to chuck out off the bank and wait for fish to swim by.[/#0000ff]

those are some pretty snazzzy looking floating jig heads, Hmmmm.
I've always used the lindy rig setup with floats and a walking weight. I also use colored beads with and without floats. I've also used very small spinner blades size 00 with no float and drift along or set elec.trolling motor to crawl speed. later chuck

[cool] [#0000ff]Have you ever tried the little floating propeller Glow-Go's, ahead of the hook? There is also a new one called the Wobble-Glo.[/#0000ff]

I've never tried wobble floats, only wobble jigs. those floats look like they would make a nightcrawler snake along pretty good. later chuck
