Knot to join 2 different lines
#1
I need a knot to join 2 different lines. I have used on knot for years to tie my fly line to the leader....but it is not all that smooth.
I need to tie some leader to my braided line. Is there a knot that is smooth enough to pass easily through my line guides without snagging? Also, when you add leader to braided line....what length do you suggest?
Thanks

Is this the knot you already know?

Overlap the ends of each piece of line.
Tie a regular knot, just like the first knot on your shoelace. But before you pull the knot tight, wrap the leader and the short end of the line through the knot-hole a second time.
Pull tight.
Cut the extra line close to the knot.

[red] Hi there rgreenland, have you ever tried a uni to uni knot? I use this knot to tie Fireline to Vanish flourocarbon when I go Fishing at Bearlake for Laketrout. I caught a very nice 13 pounder and it fought for a good while with no swivels and the knot held perfectly. [/red]

[cool][#0000ff]I prefer the blood knot for joining two pieces of mono of similar thickness. The double uni knot is good for two different thicknesses or two different type lines.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]There is another knot that is not so popular but works well for mono to braid, etc. It is the albright knot. Here is an animated diagram. Click on the pic and it will bring up the animated example.[/#0000ff]

[#002850]I agree with AFDan52 and kentofnsl. I too prefer to connect dis-similar lines useing the Double-Uni knot (also known as the Uni-to-Uni or Back-to-Back Uni knot). It gets it reputation from being a great knot for connecting two dis-similar lines ... dis-similar in size or type.

Used to join two lines together, fireline to lead core, braded to florocarbon, super lines to mono.[/#002850]

1. Lay the two lines side by side with twelve inches overlapping. Form a Uni knot type of circle on the first line

2. Wrap the first line around the second seven to ten times, through the loop of course. Wrap around the line less for heavier lines.

3. Pull the tag to engage enough tension to close and hold the wraps in place, not too tight.

4. Create another Uni knot on the second line, just like before.

5. Pull the main lines apart to butt the knots against one another. To tighten harder, pull the tag ends firmly. Clip as you like.

Here are a few more Web sites that show how to tie it:

I have a knot question also. I use to use a type of loop knot when fishing for cod. It allowed for free hook movement. Made the anchovies swim more naturally. I kept using it after returning back to Utah. But i got away from it a few years ago. Kent showed me how to tie a palomar and i bagged that knot.I know how to tie the nonslip mono knot or the rapala knot. They are simular but not the same. This knot was fast easy and not once did it ever break or fail.

Anyone know what knot that might be? If so a quick tying lesson would be apreciated.

I used the surdeons knot for the longest time. Now I use the uni. The surgeons will give you better line strenght IMO but it is harder to tie at first. Now that my fingers are getting old the uni will do nicely.

Heres how to tie a surgeon knot if I remember correctly;

hold your lines side by side, hold then together and twist them to make an ioen loop. Now turn the loop keeping it open make at least 4 turns in the line. grasp both ends so that you have all four lines (2 in each hand) and slowly pull til the knot is tight and is seated correctly. trim the loose ends and your good to go. Wish I had a pic to show you. But it is one of the easiest knots I have ever learned to tie.

Thanks TD that was fun and brought back some fond memories. Trying new knots and loosing fish cause I didn't know how to tie them right.

But the knot I was looking for wasn't there. Now I'm going to have to get unlazy and search it out.

The square knot. It may knot be the best, but it's so simple even a Boy Scout can do it.

MY $.02
I've played around with tying super to mono. The uni looks pretty good. I made up a knot (I think I made it up?) you tie a square knot and with the tag ends you tie two cinch knots. It's pretty quick and simple and seems to be quite strong. There's nothing more frustrating then finally getting a bite.... losing it and realizing that your leader knot came undone.[unsure] Anyway.....
