The Jordan 4/3
#1
Well, since it was such a nice day and I didn't really want to deal with the crowds at any of the planter ponds, I decided to try the Jordan, even though it's so dang high.

Started at 60th, or so. Started off with a Blue fox, just casting it for the heck of it before I changed to a bait rig up. I didn't figure I'd even have any bites. Untill about my 10th cast. Something slamed it, and kept on running. The 4# line on my new ultra light just couldn't handle the stress in all that current. I saw one glimpse of that big fat rainbow before he snapped the line. [Sad] Dang line! I ran up to the truck and grabbed a bigger setup, and started tossing lures again. Nothin. Finally switched to worms on the bottom in the slack water. Nothin.

So I figured what the heck, I'll run down by my house at 27th and see what's up. The decker canal was just slightly backed up by the Jordan's high water, and it looked really good. I started tossing gitzits tiped with a little bit of crawler, hoping for a walleye or maybe a whitie or two. Had a couple of twitches on the other end, but that's it.

Not too impressive of a catching day to say the least. But atleast it was great to get out on the water and enjoy the beautiful weather before it's gone again.

At least you got to get out and stretch the string on your pole! I need to go fishin' soon.

[cool][#0000ff]Big fish in big current...too much for small line. Too bad, but at least you got to see it so you know it was a "respectable" fish. Ya hate to donate good lures to something like a nasty ol' carp. Okay to catch them for fun, but not good to sacrifice lures to them.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Should be getting close to sucker time. Wanna meet up at the "outlet" when they show up? I need some suckers for bait this year. [/#0000ff]

I would like to head out to get some sucker meat too for the kitties. I've heard the 90th south bridge is a good place to go and I drive by it every day but I've never fished it. I'm hitting the water for the first time this week. Planning on fishing from the jetty at Saratoga Springs harbor... It'll be my little boys' first fishing trip. Looking forward to getting the 'toon out on the water again too.

[cool][#0000ff]I have fished the Jordan in several places, but not for many years. I definitely do not qualify as an authority. I do know that wherever you can find gravel bars, with some current, you can find suckers in quantity when they spawn.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]With the water running heavily this year already, it may be difficult to find any fish not washed into the Salt Lake.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]I have heard that there are some white bass being taken inside the SS marina. Good luck. Are you going to join us on our flotillas this year again?[/#0000ff]

Sure. I'll let ya know when they start to bite. It really should be anytime. Maybe if it'd just warm up a bit they'd start running up the canal.

The best place i've found for suckers is near midas pond. there are loads of them in there, you just have to wait them out with a nightcrawler in a big slow pool or eddie. I've also had good luck just upstream from the 106th south bridge for suckers. the river is WAY too high right now to fish, although there are fish that sit off to the side of the current. Seen my first walleye of the year caught in the shelter of one such side current a week or two back. good luck guys.

TD,

Wouldn't miss 'em. I'm looking forward to the Carp fest too.... Not a lot of bait left over from last year....

Also have you done an order from Barlows yet this year? I really would like to pick up (read: buy) some of your custom jigs. They are better than anything else available.

[cool][#0000ff]Have I got an order from Barlows yet this year? I wish I only had ONE. I own stock in them, but they never send dividends or stock certificates.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Send me a PM letting me know what jig(s) you want/need and we can play "Let's Make a Deal". I'm thinking you probably want some of the purple/chatreuse plastics and the red glitter heads. Those are some of the best all around jigs for all species that I have found.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]I keep lots of the heads made up, in different sizes, but I make up the custom colored plastics only a few at a time, because the dyed colors tend to "bleed".[/#0000ff]
