Salem Pond 04/14/06
#1
Arrived at the lake about 9 a.m. Started throwing Senkos up underneath lakeside vegetation and reeling/jigging back slowly. Drifted all along the south end with not so much as a bite. I used small dark and chartruese curly tails also, and nadda. I even tried burning my jigs/plastics through the water at various speeds. This didn't help either.

Finally after about two hours, my friend Shane tossed out a big 6" Senko and let it drift along VERY slowly as the boat slid along the water in the gentle breeze. After a few minutes he thought he had a snag, so he jerked and hooked into a beautiful little largemouth, about 11" long. It would be the only bass of the day. We continued to employ the technique to no avail. I did get one more tap much later in the day as we worked our ways around the lake, but I couldn't connect.

Bassed out, we headed to the catfish hole. Though I was soaking bait with the EXACT same technique in the same location as my friend, he managed to land three rather small cats and even hooked into a few more who released themselves before being boated, but I only got one bite throughout the rest of the day in the honey hole. His cats were large enough, however, (they were each about 13" long) that he kept them.

The only thing I went away with yesterday was a big Smile after enjoying such a nice day on a scenic pond, and a nasty sunburn (forgot the sunscreen). That's about all there is to tell.

If I don't start finding success soon, I'm gonna think I forgot how to fish. [unsure] Let me say again, though, that it really was a beautful day to be out in the boat on the water.

[cool][#0000ff]It seems to be a lot easier to be "philosophical" and poetic when you are skunked. I guess that keeps you from throwing things and saying something you might be sorry for later.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]By the way, does anybody else on BFT (besides me) ever use sunscreen? It ain't just a sunburn you're invitin'. Not to come down too hard on this issue but I suffered the loss of a longtime friend and fishing buddy last year due to skin cancer. [/#0000ff]

Thanks for the reminder about sunscreen. I don't mind getting "scalded" by you for not remembering it, though I'm already sufficiently fried from the sun yesterday. I'm hurtin' so much today on my lower legs and forearms that I won't soon forget it next time.

I used to be a life guard and what helped the best was aloe vera gell for burns. Put the aloe vera in the freezer until ice cold, don't let it freeze. Take it out and put on your sun burn, then the key part, cake it on then sit or lay in front of a fan. This will take the pain away, just repeat until better. And it is very soothing. Also, I have heard from other life guards that putting a cup of apple cider vineger into a bath tub of water and soaking for a good 20 or more minutes helps to turn your burn into a tan and also helps from not peeling. Many said they did this and they did not smell like vineger after, just take a quick shower after soaking. Don't know if this really works or not.

Just some help to relieve any pain
