No..Chubs are not the same as shad.Shad generally stay small 3"-5" and school up in big schools and are better forage fish than chubs.Chubs can grow very big and take over a lake very fast!

[cool]While that sounds like a great idea to me, unfortunitely there's WAY too much red tape from the feds (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, etc.) for UDWR to do that. There's a bunch of rules and regs. these days that prohibit the stocking of certain types of fish into lakes that have certain drainages where native trash fish live (Utah Sucker, etc.), blah blah blah...
This subject has been discussed on this board numerous times, but I'm sure someone that's really into the rules and regs (like kentofnsl) could explain this much better to you than I can. Hopefully he'll chime in on this subject yet again and explain exactly why the UDWR's hands are tied on this issue.

I dont know much about Southern Utah, but I think there is a good balance between trout species and warm water species in Northern Utah. I personally fish for both species and cannot complain. On the subject of forage fish, I feel their should be more management on waters with bass and shad inregards to their forage opportunities. Especially places like Starvation, Jordanelle and Deer Creek.

Well gizzard shad are not legal to use as bait. threadfin shad are in powell but can only used as bait on powell and they have to be dead. So good luck

The gizzard shad that has been introduced in willard bay was done as an experiment. Nobody knew if they wpild survive through our cold winters. Willard was selected because the water that flows out of willard runs into the grear salt lake. Hopefully the shad couldn't spread to any new waters. Not the case. They have spread across the willard spur and have moved into the lower part of the bear river. They have also spread across weber county when the water was pumped out for irrigation. There are some genuine concerns about gizzard shad. If you think chubs out compete trout well gizzard shad will out compete chubs. If they are introduced into the wrong body of water it would have to have a rotenone treatment. Then you would start over. The last thing you want in your posession is a gizzard shad. hope this helps. gshorthair

[cool][#0000ff]Probably the best reason there are no threadfin shad in northern Utah lakes is because they do not tolerate cold water. Any lake that caps with ice is not good habitat for threadfin. [/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Gizzard shad are another critter. They can handle the cold but they also grow big and fast. Not ideal forage for most species and actually compete with trout because the shad eat the zooplankton needed by trout.[/#0000ff]
