Bountiful Cats
#1
I've been fishing at Bountiful pond for the last two or three weeks for the cats with a variety of diferent baits including shrimp, nightcrawlers, stinkbaits. Well finally yesterday I headed out after school with my new secret bait. Li'l smokies! It took me a while to find 'em but once I did I easily caught my limit of four fish. A fourteen, sixteen, seventeen, and a twenty incher. All caught within half an hour. I'm going to fry them up tonight or tommorow and let you know how they are. These were my first cats ever! And I can now agree with those who say they put up quite the fight. Thanks for the tips on the smokies they loved 'em. I can't wait to get back and catch some more. I'd like to take my tube out there it would be fun to get one of those fish pulling you around.

Yes they are small franks, Cut one open to release the scent and the cats love them. Please remember that the Catfish that are in the Community ponds are stocked there and if you take a full limit several times, the cats will be gone in no time. Take some home to eat but please let some go. The kids will thank you for doing it.

Thanks for the report, yea those cats are fun to catch but just as DKS said, throw a few back to fight another day. A lot of the local ponds are stocked so the kids that can't get away from the city will have a place to fish. Utah lake should be heating up soon, when it does the catching show be hot, give it a try, you'll like it. WH2

[cool][#0000ff]Last night was our Youth Fishing Program night on Bountiful. Just as the kids were getting ready to go fishing, two large groups of "locals" spread out around one large area of the lake, with a rod out in every opening in the shoreline brush.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]The freshly planted cats seemed to be grouped in one area and the kids had a tough time fishing without a lot of "help". I saw a lot of fish leaving the lake. It doesn't take long for the word to get out when they plant it and it doesn't take long for the majority of the fish to get caught out.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]My group of kids ended up staying well away from the hubbub. We got two bites, but no fish.[/#0000ff]

[cool]Congrats on your kitties, billybass23. Those little recent planters can be fun, but wait until you tie into a 5 pounder or bigger (and they ARE in there...). You won't believe the fight those guys put up.

I was out there again friday after school with some friends and only caught one which came in the first two minutes of fishing but it was a dandy. 24" but I don't know how heavy I need to get a little scale. It was probably at least four pounds, and wow what a fight it put up. I haven't caught a trout that took out that much drag in a long time. What a blast!!! It seemed that most of the people out there were doing ok with a couple guys that I talked to that did really well. I saw some guys with kids on the first dock catching a bunch, I don't know what kind but they were kind of small. I think that it would be fun to get out fishing for the cats in my float tube, and wondered what the best areas would be? I know that I could fish the same area as I had from the shore, but I was also wondering how it is our deeper towards the middle where you can't get from the shore? I've never been out there so any information from those of you get out in boats and tubes fishing for cats would be great. After this I've also decided that the next time I fish for trout it will all be catch and release. If I want a fish for the table I'll go out for the cats, all boneless what could be better. I'm hooked! thanks for all of the help.
And by the way I know that I should release the fish but I have never caught a catfish before and I wanted to eat some. they were great. And by the way I am a kid. well a teen actually. thanks again.

Well the plan was to hit the pond last night but when I got down there I about choked. cars all the way down to the dump! So we just turned around and headed home, I hate fishing when there's that many people. But I'll probably be going out tomorrow night around five thirty or six if anyones interested. I'm also looking to get my tube out on it in the next few weeks and I was just wodering if anyone had any suggestions on fishing for the cats from a tube. do you find 'em right out in the middle? thanks for all the advice, and I hope to see you out there.
