cannon mini mag boom?
#1
ive been looking around online trying to find a longer boom for my grandpas mini mag. the one on there is the 2 foot boom that came with the rigger. does anyone know where i can buy an aluminum or stainless boom that is around 4 or 5 feet long? i wanted to get him a telescoping boom, but they dont work for the smaller body downriggers. ive seen longer booms on small downriggers, but dont know where to get them. any help?

Try E-bay it wasnt to long ago i seen some longer booms for mini-mags on there. Also you might try a local fabrication shop.

I was at Cabelas the other night looking at down riggers and they had extension booms for the down riggers it was stainless steel I believe.

the only booms ive seen at cabelas are the telescopic ones for the big body downriggers. i need one that will fit a mini mag or sport troll. thanks for the replies. i may have to check into having one made. anyone know of a shop around salt lake that will do custom jobs like this?

I bet if you looked up a metal shop here local you could find some round aluminum and make one your self. there's a machine shop in murry off redwood a little ways and around 50th south, it's called TMK machine. it's a guy that works out of his house. he used to do work for my job, he does alot of small jobs. not sure of the phone number. later chuck

Why do you need a longer boom? And can your gunnel handle the added strain? I have the larger canon downriggers and have never used the telescoping booms.

i need a longer boom to create a little more spread. its not totally necessary, but should help alleviate some of the occasional tangle ups. and my boat should have no problem handling another couple of feet. it doesnt seem to cause any problems when i put my digi troll with the telescopic boom on there. thanks for bringing that up though... i'll definately check it out and reinforce it if needed. i need to get down to cabelas and try and find one this week sometime.

How many downriggers are you running? ...four? Run them at different depths, which you should be doing anyways to give the fish a different look. Also you can fish 2 poles per downrigger.

Another possibility is that your distance from cannonball to lure is too far--at least if your lines are crossing. I wouldn't think you'd need longer booms unless you're running 4 riggers on the back of your boat.

we run 3 downriggers off of my boat right now. two of them are a hair close. we always run different depths and keep the lead length somewhat short on the outside rigger. but, all that being said, i think a longer boom on my grandpas mini mag would help a bit. like i said before its not a huge deal. we've done well even with an occasional tangle. i just thought creating a little more spread would help a bit. i still havent gone down to cabelas yet... they have a shotgun i want and im afraid if i go down i'll buy it! i'm sure i'll go check it out in the next while.
