Salem Pond w/Grandson
#1
Well we headed out to Salem after a quick stop at the local Walley World. Truly a nice day to take a kid fishing.

Now with that said Chi wasn't into fishing all that much. He was however into the DUCKS that are all over the place.

Lots of tiny fish in close and we had a great time. Didn't catch any fish but watched the bobber bounce and get dragged all over the place.

Man that is a nice Park! Well cared for. I wonder about the people who use it though. Empty worm containers thrown into the pond. Like that styrofoam will break down in the next 1000 years or so. What were they thinking? But it get better than that. Over by the *swimming beach* there were lots of folks out enjoying Memmorial Day. Having BBQs, eating KFC and the like. This one family had brought shrimp and munched out. Nope I didn't see them, just their blanket and the piles of shrimp casings all around it. I said they'd pick it up before they leave. WRONG! While we let the little tyke play in the water they packed up and left the mess on the lawn. What slobs!

Well I had a ton of fun with the grandson anyway. The next trip he may be more ready to fish than this one. I think this was a granddad outing.

Road,

Sorry I wasn't around to give you some advice before you took the grandson out. (This is the first time I've logged in to BFT in about three days.)

I've fished Salem Pond about a half dozen times in the last couple of months. I tend to hit it towards the evening hours in my boat whenever a friend or two wants to join me.

Several times as I've been loading the boat in the dark, at the gravel boat ramp, I've talked with different groups of people, and usually I'll hear of good success for the fiesty cats in that area. The bait of choice is always shrimp. That's what I tend to have a good deal of success with as well.

The cats tend to be out about 15-20 yards or so from the shore, so you'll have to toss it out a little ways. Usually right off the bottom works, or use a bobber with a very long leader.

About two weeks ago while I was loading the boat on the trailer in the dark, I watched some teenagers fish with some golf-ball sized bobbers that had bright lights in them. The kids were very friendly, so I hung out with them for a few minutes before I took off.

It was VERY COOL to see those big lights go shooting under the water. When the cats took the lights deeper, it was fun to try and keep track of the lights until the bobbers were reeled closer to the surface.

Anyway, try shrimp for cats near the boat ramp, and don't be afraid to toss the bait out about as far as you can.

Yessirree I recognize that spot. There are TONS of little baby bass and gills in that spot. That's where I caught my biggest bucketmouth of the year this year - a whopping 5 inches!!!

My son also liked the ducks when we went there, and even chased one up the steep hill to the west up towards the road. It's a nice little spot.

Salem sure can get packed with crowds, though. During the week might be better.

Too bad about the trash leaving trash behind. That sure is one of my pet peeves![mad]

Hey Oceans I had the chance to catch lots of somethings LOL. But the Sponge Bob Square Pants fishing pole was to cute to get serious with. As for worms I never leave home without them, my favorite bait. I was letting the little bass and sun fish pull the bobber all over the place under the trees. My daughters got a bigger kick out of that than if I was catching fish. But it is a nice place to take the kids.
