Moon Lake!
#1
[#ff0000]Headed out to the Uintah Basin this past weekend for some fun in the sun! (I mean wind) None the less had a great time. Went up to Moon Lake a couple of times to fish and sight see. [/#ff0000]
[#ff0000]Everytime I go up there I am blown away at how beautiful it is! I go up there at least a couple times a year. I was talking with a friend last winter about how big it is and under estimated its size. Saying it was the size of Hyrum res. I would guess Moon Lake is over twice the size of Hyrum res. and very very deep. Never did much fishing up there but there were some pictures posted and reports of 10 lb + splake being caught frequently and alot of 12-16 inch kokes too. Here are some pictures from the trip. I will post the actual fishing pictures since my 8 year old decided to show us how it was done.

The time up is about 2 hours unless your o2 sensor decides to take a turd all over the road and leave you on hwy 40 at the soilder creek turn off.

[red]It is just under 2 hours from SLC! There is also a great bed and breakfast in Mountain Home Ut. (15-20 min from Moon Lake) www.rockcreekstorebb.com[/red]

can you launch large boats i wonder how it would be fishing with downriggers.

You can launch large boats but the boat ramp is mostly just sandy beach and it is very hard to get them out. It is very easy to get a 4X4 buried in the sand so use CAUTION! Down riggers would work as I have used leaded line trolling in the past.

[#ff0000]The boat ramp is tricky! I used to launch my 19 foot tri hull with relatively no problems. But there is no traditional boat ramp up there. Just the road come down to compacted sand, or what you hope is compacted sand. The water stays fairly shallow for a long distance off shore before dropping off deep into the water filled canyon[/#ff0000]

[black][#ff0000]As for down riggers- dynamite. catching kokes and trout. I spoke with a DWR officer a couple of years ago and he said that the big splake for some reason like to hand in the 40 foot range along the sandy beaches. I have personally seen grayling caught out of there and mountain whitefish[/#ff0000]!!![/black]

Thanks for the beautiful pictures. Fished Moon Lake as a child and almost drowned in some rushing water. Beautiful place to fish and visit. Was going to go there a couple years ago, but couldn't get a cabin. I need to make it back out there.

My brother in law, my son and myself took the tubes out from the dam and down the east bank on Friday. I ended up with 1 cutt. and 2 small splake. The wind started to pick up so we only stayed about 2hrs.

Nice pictures Rob and I'll have to say the water is higher than I have seen it in years at the dirt ramp. Just for those that don't know, they also have horses there that you can ride for short or long rides. The last time I talked to them the rates started around $50.00 for a two hour ride. It's a very beautiful area with lots of trees and nice areas to camp if you can't get a cabin.
