Tubin' Yuba Reservoir (Utah)
#1
[cool][#0000ff]Posted this as a local report on the Utah board. Since we were in tubes I though I better put it up here too.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[black][#0000ff]Launched behind the bridge at 6:30 AM and got out at 11:30 AM. Air temp at launch 38...83 at take out. Water temp at launch 62...66 at take out.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Water level was down about 4 feet from spill level. Just low enough for us to kick under the bridge without dragging our rod tips. The swallows didn't like it though. See pics of the swarm and the nests.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Started out kicking down the face of the dam and [green]fishing[/green] along the south shore line. Zippo. A couple of light whacks for each of us (me and TubeBabe), but no hookups. Saw very little on sonar. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Saw a [green]boat[/green] trolling out in deeper water lose a fish after it jumped. Later saw the boat at the cleaning station with double limits of rainbows, to about 4#. They were trolling Rapalas shallow.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Water was flat calm and very clear. Tried quite a few different jigs and spinners. Worked back over to the north side and started casting along the edge of the gravel dropoff. WHAM! First rainbow. About 16". Fought like a demon and jumped several times. Love those Yuba bows.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Got another about the same size a few minutes later. Hollered at TubeBabe to move over to where the action was. By that time a light breeze had come up from the east...a fishing riffle. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]For the next hour or so we had constant interaction with Yuba's rainbows. We had hits on at least every other cast. We landed maybe 20 between us, and "longline-released" about twice that. We both lost fish over 4 pounds that simply leaped and cartwheeled until they threw the spinners back to us. Fun, fun.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]We only kept the fish that were bleeding and when we each had four in the basket we kicked back under the bridge to our vehicle. Before we got out, I tried a few casts with my spinner inside the spill channel. Found a school of willing perchies and caught several on my spinner before dragging out and heading for the cleaning station. Biggest I brought to the tube was about 10 inches, but I had a couple on that felt bigger. Hope the perch are doing well all over the lake.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I fished shallow and deep with a variety of lures today, in hopes of finding a stray walleye or northern. Nada. I did see a couple of schools of small fish (on sonar) in about 15 feet of water that were probably perch. I was busy with trout at the time and did not stop to play with them.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Caught fish on both chrome and brass blade spinners today, but the brass was decidedly the most popular...especially with some orange on the blade or the single hook tied tail. The fish would often bump the retrieved spinners several times before [green]climbing[/green] on. It took discipline to keep reeling until we felt weight.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Most of our fish came from about 20 to 30 feet of water, but were all caught in the upper 10 feet of the water column. Shallow trolling is the ticket if you are in a boat. If you are casting, let your lure sink a few feet and then [green]reel[/green] about medium speed.[/#0000ff]

Great report Tubedude. Those are healthy looking rainbows. great pics, too. Always nice when they go airborne. That ripple on the water looks to be just right. Those are the very best days - not glassy smooth but not blowing a gale. That bare Utah landscape in the background is something we don't see much of here. Always do a kind of double take when I see it.

I enjoyed the swallow shots. I like to see them when they have their hatched young in the little mud nests. After the babys grow a bit they tend to poke their heads out of the holes.

One of those pesky things chased me all the way out to my car in the parking lot the other day at work. Apparently there is a nest of them near the entrance, and the things are very protective. It kept circling me round and round and dive bombing my head all the way to my car, which was over 150 yards out into the lot!

Raised the hair on my neck a bit, it came pretty close a few times.

[cool][#0000ff]Thanks Z. Evidently you have not fished the reservoirs in eastern Oregon much. Some of those ponds out around Prineville look pretty much like our Utah desert waters. Pretty barren around the edges but good fish life in the water.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]The trout we got yesterday were healthy and feisty, but none were among the chunky fish that come out of Yuba...up to 8 pounds or more. I got into some 4 to 6 pound fish last fall and plan to do more late season fishing this year when the big boys come out to play again.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Here are a few archive pics of the reservoir and the fish for your enjoyment.[/#0000ff]

Yeah TD, I've fished Eastern Oregon. And I used to drive to Prineville every weekend to fish Crooked River. I really like the high desert over there - especially after a long winter in the rain forest on the west side. People don't realize what 8+ months under a drippy cloud canopy can do to your brain. Guess it has just been a long, rainy winter and spring. I was letting my gloom leak out. As I look out the window into our front yard as I'm typing this, its green, cloudy and rainy.

Nice archive pics. Thanks for sharing.

[cool][#0000ff]Sorry, Uncle Z. But, you live in Oregon, so what do you expect?[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]If it will make you feel any better (or worse) here is a LINK TO THE FORECAST for Salt Lake this weekend. I would PM you some sunshine, but with the new system my sending got blocked (Ha!).[/#0000ff]
